Hey guys.
This is a really dumb question least i think so, so i'll ask it here.
I need to get an exhuast for my new turbo setup. Why is it every cat back i see on ebay has a fart can style muffler? Do these things really improve performance with there 4.5 + inch outlet?
I'm really temped to just do my own cat back so i can get something with maybe a 3inch dual outlet.

Anyone on here done dual exhuast that has pictures? thats what i really wanna do.

Well since your N/T your exhaust is gonna be loud. I'd get a Magnaflow oval muffler they're alot quieter then "cannons"

its the common thing to do, kind of the bandwagon. As for dual 3" exhaust. First being NA, and having that type of exhaust would make your car quite LOUDER than the fart can. 2nd, the 2nd path of the exhaust out would not be used much at all. The sharp bend and then the other bends are going to make that side the restrictive side and gas vapors like most else takes the path of least resistance. Besides, howmany 400-600 hp DSM have dual exhaust? next to none. The single exhaust is more than sufficant. 2.5" in your case is BIG. I seem to remember NA being 2.25" for some reason.

BUT it is your car and that being said, if it were me I would stick to the single route and save money/ headaches on the other muffler, piping, bends, work, and finangling. There are a few pictures on google and here I have seen with dual exhaust DSMs.

I have my motor out building it up for a turbo. Turbo is sitting on my tool box waiting for me.

I know dual has zero point just kinda looks cool My old Audi TT i just sold had dual and that was only a 1.8L turbo but it looked cool.
 
Im blind, I didnt even see that. OOPS, but like I stated in teh last line, its your car. I personally hate body kits and spoilers, but I will not try to talk someone out of it. I will however point out htings like cost, (paint labor prep) ect. The magnaflows can be had for around $100 on the net, mandral bends (depending on the material, a bit expensive), then you need to find a compitant welder. So you could save a few hundered depending on materail you choose. Then you need to cut up your bumper since unlike the audis there is only 1 opening on the bumper. Then body work and paint to make it look decent the cost can add up fast here. But if thats what you want go for it. Unique has its perks.
 
I kinda like the magnaflow that came with my VRS exhaust... actually magnaflow has so many I would try their site...you might be surprised at the number of non-"fart" style tips...
 
Okay here i go again. I need a DB idea of what this is going to make.

I wanna go 2.5 or 3 inch straight out the back of my car right off the turbo.
I may put in a high flow cat but guessing not.

At the tail i'm going to Y off into duals kinda like how the audi TT did. just before the dip in the trunk for the spare tire i'm going to Y off and put a outlet on the other side too.
My idea is to run no mufflers just those rezinating tips *spelling* you know what i'm talking about? there about 4 ish inch stainless tips for the exhuast pipe, they have that honeycomb on the insides kinda like cherry boms or glass packs do just very little of it seeing as there just tips.

How loud is this going to be? I know the SRT4 does'nt have mufflers. If if is going to get me ticked all the time it may not be worth it.
Also i'm not ricing the car at all just fresh pant and a turbo wing so it's not going to stick out so cops shouldn't wanna pick on it.

Also i'm not anti cop but when i had my green Eclpise FF clone i get pulled over if i farted too loud inside the car. :)
 
A friend was doing a low buck build up and just ran 3" piping, no cat, resonators or muffler. His car was loud and sounded like ass IMHO. He went to a scrap yard and found a 3" in 3" out round muffler off of a diesel truck and welded it up, lowered the noise a good bit but still sounded like crap. On custom work setups, its highly unlikely that anyone has done the "excact" thing so it would all be a guess on the noise level.

the SRT is a different story. They have 2 resonators (if im not mistaking) and a cat. When they upgrade to a larger exhuast and get rid of some of this, the car gets stupid loud. Thats why the magnaflow srt system has a muffler. There is a guy here who him and his 2 roommates all drive SRT4s, they are pretty much even on mods, since when 1 buys, if it was good, the other 2 follow suit. When the one roomie bought the exhuast and they heard it, they kept the stock catback, did a 3" downpipe, got rid of the cat, and ran a QTP electric cutout. All 3 of these guys run between 11.7 and 11.9 almost everytime out at 4200ft elevation on the stage 3 turbo upgrade, modified by DCR.

Best thing to do is do your exhuast and if its too loud, go the RRE (or similar site) and purchase a 3" resonator and throw it in, till you reach the level you wish.

thats kind what i figured.
i may just end up putting two nice looking stainless flow through mufflers on it. it's still going to be loud but not going to sound all poppy like all the civics around here.
 
if you want my .02, Get a 3" custom turboback and buy a 100 dollar Magnaflow muffler with dual tips, looks like a stock 2g turbo muffler and its magnaflow, you know it will sound nice.
