Kamloops,
so i just got my dsm... it has a boost controller which i think isnt working (its a little melted), cause it wants to keep boosting more and more even at its lowest setting... but anyways... at about 12-14 psi i starts to pop, fart, stutter... then over the next shift (or 2 depending on how fast im going throuh gears) i send a blue cloud out the tail pipe. so im thinkin that the turbo is shot? the car came with a near mint evo3 16g (checked the numbers, its the evo3) for me to install.. so that is going in tomorrow morning. anything else i should check for? or maybe look into? im gonna try and do a boost leak test. as for the stuttering i get at higher boost... its not the revlimiter like fuel cut... that doesnt kick in until 15-17 psi... now the evo3 16g... what would the best thing to do to set it up be? run the boost controller on with it and set it at low for now? if i bypassed the MBC, what boost levels should i see out of it?
i would search but i have very limited internet time while im at my dads place (dial up) and i have spent the last week searching online...
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Start by checking your turbo for shaft play. In/out play is bad (pulling the compressor toward or pushing it away from the inlet). Side/side is okay if it isn't hitting the housing. Also, you can check your LICP for oil. Film may be on the walls normally, but a blow compressor seal will send more than a film out the compressor outlet.

If the turbo is fine, check compression and follow up with a leakdown test if you see low compression.

If the turbo is shot and the Evo3 is going on:

Don't bypass the MBC. The turbo will boost too much, and you'll either hit fuel cut, you'll lean out bigtime, and knock like crazy. If you boost too much, the turbo will go beyond its efficiency range and blow hotter and hotter air which will lead to knock. If you flow too much air, the stock injectors and fuel pump won't be able to deliver enough fuel and you'll lean out and start consuming the metal in your engine.

Get an aftermarket boost gauge if you don't already have one. Then you know what boost you're running.

Start out at 13-14psi by setting your MBC. If the MBC is fried, get a new one.

If you wanna go farther, you really need to get some type of logger. Then you can see if you're pushing the fuel system too far (leaning out) or knocking.

The Evo3 is happy when it gets to 20+psi, but you can't do this without supporting mods like bigger fuel pump and injectors and some sort of piggyback or aftermarket ECU to control the larger injectors.

alright... well i know the MBC is working somewhat.. cause the previous owner had it cranked up.. thats when it was hitting 15-17 psi... and hitting fuel cut... i have since turned it down and seeing 12-14 psi. one of the 6 gauges in the car is a boost gauge, so i am monitoring that constantly. i will check for shaft play in the old turbo. the evo3 has no shaft play whatsoever. at this point i dont want to go higher than 13-14 psi... i just want a turbo that works properly and doesnt blow smoke.

I had a simular issue on my 1G laser. it was a blown turbo. check for oil in your intercooler piping and shaft play. and check the wastegate to be sure its not sticking closed from seising or the vacume line being cut.
