I just had the front pump changed in my fwd auto trans, and now that the trans is back in the car, proper fluid levels and all hooked up right, it refuses to shift back down to first gear when coming to a stop or from R to D. If i shift into L and go through the gears manually it shifts way closer to normal, but in order for me to catch 1st gear coming to a stop, i have to put it all the way back down to L and start from there. Now i just put a new filter in a few weeks ago, and now a new pump, and to me it seems if it was the end clutches my overdrive wouldn't work, but it does, the car shifts fine as long as I'm moving, kicks down just fine, o/d on and off works fine, just wont catch first gear at all when coming to a stop unless i put it in L, or rev the hell out of it. This is my first AT dsm and i know absolutely nothing about them. Any info would be great, or ideas i could as least check into.

Thanks for the space.

Did you have this problem before any of the work ?
Or did you change the filter and pump to try to solve the problem ?
The only suggestion I have would be to make sure the throttle position sensor is working correctly as it will have a effect on the trans in first gear .
Because if the trans computer sees the throttle closed at stopped it will not go to first gear it will be in second then it shifts into first gear as soon as you give it the gas to take off from a stop this is normal ,but if the sensor is bad and the tcu sees throttle closed all the time it wont go into first gear .
Its done this way on 1Gs but a little different but should have the same effect on 2Gs . Hope this helps

I agree. The 2G does sit in 2nd gear and quicky shifts to first as you accelerate, so it sounds like the TPS isn't tripping the idle switch function. Our trannys are very TPS dependant. If not, a valve may be stuck. I had similar issues after a complete rebuild, and ended up just getting the Translab kit and manual valve, and all these issues were immediatly resolved.

well a little update, as of today, my car no longer has reverse and neutral is now a forward gear LOL. As long as i shift the car manually up and down to third gear its fine, overdrive feels like a massive engine brake and will bring the car to a dead stop very quickly. Im going to yet again, take that heavy peice of shit slushbox off my car and take it in again. I cant afford to get the IPT upgrade rebuild kit, so im going to just have the minimal amount of shit done to it so i can get my new nickle and dimer on the road again. Any ideas on what i should all change give what i just said?

If you mean again I guess you had it at a tranny shop before if so I would find somebody else and get you money back from the first place .
I don't think any of the gear train is hurt "hope not" ,sounds like one of the clutch packs have fried and locked up ,If that's the case just a full rebuild kit will have all the parts needed unless some of the gears ar dead .Make sure that the tranny cooler is not plugged up with dead friction material from the clutches and crude as this will kill the new overhaul in a hurry .I would still check the throttle sensor but it wont fix this problem for sure .

well, what the tranny shop did had nothing to do with the clutch packs, those fried because i didnt realize my tranny was leaking till it was almost empty and started to act weird. so that is my fault, the trans shop did a decent job of replacing the pump and everything, now i just need these clutch packs fixed. This is my first AT trans, so i have no clue what any of this stuff is, whole new ball game. I dont think the gear train is bad or anything, cause it still shifts just fine if i go manually through them. Just O/D is ####ed up, so i dont know the extent of what i have to have replaced yet, and im hoping that i can get it done for under 250 buck LOL

I don't think a tranny shop will do it for that much unless they just replace the one clutch that's bad but I don't they would do that .Can't remember what my trans kit with all seal, friction plates and steel plates was but under $150. And thats probly all you need plus a filter and oil .
PS I know I only paid 17.95 for the Translab shift kit .:sneaky:
Got all of it from a trans part wholesaler .

So that don't leave much for all the labor to do all the work .Take the trans cooler to them also so they can check it out (a must when it get fried ).
Good luck with the rebuild .

also sounds like they didnt adjusft the shift cable when putting it all baack together thats why you would have to manual shift from the begining (before it ran out of fluid) if that shift cable is off it feels like you dont have the right amount of gears........it would feel like D would really be 2nd and 2nd would be L ect.....might be something to check out......and how did the leak happen was it existing because they were the only ones to touch the trans so it could be there fault

thought this might help I have to adjust my cable
