Hey whats up guys... ok so over the past weeks i had a 3" pipe made to bolt in place of my apex muffler because top end was a lil restrictive... then one day i was playin with the muffler off the car at work... decided to see if i could take the little 2.5" reducer out of the inside of it.. just took an air chizzle to it and sure enough 10min later it slid right out.. now when you look inside it is like almost 4"!!! :D straight through.. Sounds VERY deep and Very nice when your WOT... ill try to post up an exhaust clip... but i would recommend who has this muffler to do it :thumb:

Thanks guys

I did this back in '05 on a universal apex N1 that was 3" to begin with.

I used an air grinder with a 10" extended carbide bit and ground all the spot welds off as to not destroy the baffaling. The piece that you remove is not a resonator at all nor is a restriction, it is just a pipe, why it is there I don't know. Once removed the diameter is 3.5" all the way through VS the 3" before. The only reason I did this was because I ran a 3.5" exhaust. If you have ever read Buschurs post about 3.5 VS 3 piping this is a usesless mod, unless maybe you are making 1000hp however I did the mod before he did the testing.

The exhuast got much quiter also, and I REALLY don't like it, but it is what I got now.

i beg to differ... correct me if im wrong here..(not tryin to be mean) If your whole exhaust is 3" then at then end gets even bigger right before it goes into the muffler..( i would say 3and3/4" pipe) then goes to a 2.5" pipe to exit. to me that would be a restriction... especially at 23 psi... the only reason i did this was because i was feeling restricted top end.. once i did this i have no more problems.. seems to me it worked... :D and sounds better than it did.. IMO :thumb:

Did everyone else have exhaust packing in there? Like steel wool? What did everyone do with that? I haven't gotten mine out yet. I give up for today since my screw driver broke. LOL

Hey man.. ok i noticed you asking about the steel wool/fiberglass or w.e. it is.... here is what you do... when you start hammering the pipe make sure you dont go to the far outside pipe.. you will see if you get a light it looks like two layers of pipe.. you wanna go between the two and break the spot welds.. once you get all the welds off it and roll it enough inward it should slide out... let me know if you need help man...

Did you not read the post correctly. The muffler was 3" all the way through to begin with. I have no clue about the 2.5" mufflers, why would anybody be running or using a 2.5 muffler or exhaust???

I read correctly... Did you?? i dont know if the mufflers are different or not.. but i can tell you that my exhaust IS
3" and it gets slightly larger just before it goes into the muffler. its a true Apex N1 turbo back... an inside the muffler was the 2.5" pipe... which was a restriction for me....just like the resignators that come on the system.. they slim down to like 2 1/4" they are a restriction... why would it not be..?? and i would assume to anyone with the same exhaust its a restriction for them too

Does anyone have a picture showing the pipe in the muffler before they removed it? I looked at mine but I don't see anything that looks like it will come out.

edit: Maybe I misunderstood this. Do you remove it through the inlet or outlet of the muffler?

Damn that's good to hear slvrDsm, but when I try to check out the video u posted up, it won't start and it just says "Sorry, this is a private video."

Also, I think i'm going to plan on buying an Apexi N1 turbo back exhaust. Ever since I saw this youtube video of a 99 GSX with the same exhaust not too long ago, it convinced me fairly quick:

YouTube - 1999 mitsubishi eclipse gsx

Damn, i'll never get tired of hearing the sound of that DSM. :D

^Nah no doubt, I never said it wasn't compressor surge. But then again, I wasn't even listening to the turbo, just the exhaust sounds sexy enough! :D

Where exactly are these spot welds? I dont see any spot welds in my Apexi N1 Cat-back.

^^^ Alright, that would make sense. So just pound a screw driver in there and bend it back alittle bit in order to find the tacs. Then just pound the tacs out. Sounds easy enough.

Its just that inner tubeing that you want to take out correct? If you look at the picture it looks like there 2 there.

Forget the muffler, worry about what kind of CRAP Apex put into that resonator! Check this pic when it came off my car the fab shop chopped it up; I made 517whp through that thing on a 60trim. Who knows how much I really would have made:

Apex was on my hit list after finding that little easter egg. 3" exhaust huh?

^^^ Shit I wish I would of known this before I bought it. Looks like I'l be cutting out those resonators and putting in just a straight pipe.

I too have it out for the N1. Thanks for posting further information on that topic and of course the picture. It's a hard go to "prove" it when the pictures are scarce. Good show.

I suggest cutting the exhaust into little bits and putting them in the trash can you can even engrave "gixxerdrew" on the side as that would make me feel better.

you remove it from the outlet side.. its hard to see and hard to explain LOL..

correct.. you wanna split the two.. once u break to welds the pipe should slide out..
