Hi there Everyone,

I just got this 1991 GSX (my first ever turbo car) and was wondering if anyone have participated in any autocrossing event and how did it feel behind the wheel. I do autocrossing with my 1997 RS and his fun just wanting some feedback if any upon the AWD crowd, Thank You!

Autocross is great. I love it. It just takes a long time to get really accustomed to it, to where you know exactly how the car's gonna handle on any specific surface, and how you can best get the car around the course. It's all a mindgame. ;)

i have never autoX my car (mostly because i need a roll bar) and my suspension isnt good enough...yet. But i have autoX my friends AE86 will full suspension. AutoX is really fun and more adredline rush then drag. I wish i had a car that handles as good as my friends Corolla GT-S...slow as $hit though :dsm:

As long as you keep a good line, turn in, apex and so youll be fine....just imagin more power a little more wieght. The suspension on 2gs are a little better then 1gs, but at yor level it wont matter. One day in a parking lot(empty) test your turn in at low speeds and then go out and have fun

I've been AutoX'in my AWD 2G Talon all summer, and I must say it's a blast. I'm in SM and run some yokohamas with 60 Treadware rating, good suspension etc.
Like all AWD cars they have benifits at corner exits, but takes some finess in long sweepers with understeer if your to anxious on the throttle. I've found that running soft dampning in front, stiff in rear, big 18mm rear sway, all help keep the rear in track, but sometimes a little trail braking is what is really needed to bring the rear around faster to straighten the car to get better exit speeds.. Seat time... Fly out of corners but enter them like a well setup FWD car. Seat time I suppose.

just my 2 Cents

I have been autocrossing my self but with my 97 RS and even though I started with it purely stock I now sport full suspension set up only need sway bars and its good to go I have gained time by 6-9 seconds. I still have stock exhaust manifold but dont need it yet... About my GSX I will keep it stock for the first 4 races maybe all the way to the 6 one. Then I'll start by going for suspension then go from there besides it will be fun that way because you learn to drive your car when stock meaning any changes can be can be noticible behind the wheel. I have dropped a good 1.5 second thru sLOLams keep the Throttle steady instead of increasing and decreasing it thru sLOLams. What would be the best non costly upgrade one can do to their GSX for acceleration??? Thanks Guys

I think the GSX has stellar acceleration, if launched correctly, and can provide incredible corner exits. For Most non costly, I'd have to say a Rear Sway bar. I really can't think of any major (free - Very low cost) ways to make it accel better. Mabey take the back seats, and spare tire out to reduce weight, and will allow the back to "Swing around, a little easier. I got a MBC cheap, but with my stock t-25 I'll sustain 16 PSI which helps, (anything more is just hot air). I think one of the best investments would be between suspension/tires/sway bars.
Although you are right about keeping it stock for a while and leaning the limits of the car's base. At least you will notice what has changed and how far you can take the car to it's new limits with that part. I will say however, you chose one hell of a base to start with :thumb:

What I mean by that is for a while, I was using the BCS Restrictor Removal *free mod* and would get the turbo to spike 18PSI, then QUICKLY fall down to 13-12PSI. I'm pretty sure that I was just blowing tons of hot air because the T25 was far past it's efficiency. As a result of this, I was probably knocking pretty good in the higher RPM range, and the ECU was pulling timing. I'm still running my stock fuel pump, and have not even rewired my fuel pump yet. I just found that using a MBC I could to spin 15-16PSI from 3100RPM till around 6000RPM, which was much better than having the car surge for a breif second, then by 4800-5000RPM, be dropped to 12-13PSI and lose all top end. IMO, turbo seems to spool a little faster and feels like it just hits harder.

There are still alot of power adders I want for my car, but want it to handle first, and for me to get a handle on it :thumb:

Uhm - your car has a 14b stock, not a T25. And running a little bit higher-than-stock boost always helps. :) I actually have been running 17psi on my ported 14b for this season so far...

Thank you for the clearing up... Who sells the best stock replacement Manifold for a 1st gen???? I need one bad it is cracked just found this out 4 hrs ago thank you guys.

I realize this, I was explaining how my boost response changed for better on MY platform. I was trying to speak generally, since a MBC is always a good thing :thumb:

Sorry about the confusion

The best thing is seat time. I started auto-x this year, and I have learned a lot so far. I wouldn't worry about modding the car too much. I'd just get as much seat time as possible to get a feel for the car. Then you will have a better idea of what modifications you need to do to make the car handle the way you want. Also keep in mind that different modifications will change your class. My car was heavily modded, so I'm in the shark tank with the rest of the Street Mod guys (and gals, but I'm loving every minute of it :) ).

Definitely a fun time though :) and there are many others into auto-x too. There is a yahoo group for DSMs that are into autocross. Lots of experienced people to get info from on everything from car setup to driving technique. MAny of them are regional or national champions. You should look into it.

Yeah I been Auto-X for 2 years now I just wanted to know more about the AWD way since I SOOooooo used to the FWD non-Turbo LOL but I roll with some big in the head guys and beat them some times in my book nothing to brag since thats not the purpose of this sport... I love to be out driving with skilled people not just a punk who thinks he can and will when is the opposite of it LOL you know what I mean? Anyway Thank You Guys keep em coming am loving this Thread

lots of help for setting up a 1G (or 2G) for autocross.

I've read every inch of that site, and I'm amazed. It's remarkable how he fit 275's under that car using 1" wheel spacers. I would love to set my car up to that extreme. However I wish he documented more on the front LSD. It seems as though that is the most definitive answer (as well as being a incredible driver) to eliminate power-on understeer. Takes alot of self control to keep it easy on the throttle during long sweeps to no push. Kinda wish someone in the area had a front LSD, or a EVO RS :D I could ride in to see how well it works. I've heard of some drivetrain lash with center and front LSD's, is this true?

Keep up the good work guys... I just did the air can deal where nearly half of it was cut out and the smaller honey comb was eliminated aswell, but couldnt tell a whole lot of difference on the mod... I need an exhaust manifold so maybe thats got something to do with it uh! :dsm:
