A guy has one for sale by me. All I can say is its big, T3/T4 internally gated, And says "Air Research" on the compressor housing, with minimal shaft play. He only wants $100, should I snag it, or is it junk?

Not looking to put it on my car, just like to have for future or trade.
"
If I remember correctly it said it like this" AiResearch"

From surfing the net, it seems that this is a Garrett turbo?!?!? I think Ill buy and just hang on to it, unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

AiResearch= Garret. We have no idea if it will be good for your car. You haven't listed what you want it to do and there are no specifics about the turbo. Some hybrids can make 500+hp, some you'd be better off with a 14b.

How do you know it's a hybrid? Bring some calipers and measure the inducer/exducer of the compressor. Any A/R marks on the housing? Sometimes on the turbine it's indented just inside the inlet. Did he make it? It's unlikely to be worth anything if it's a home made hybrid. I made one with a junkyard hot side and an ebay cold side. I wouldn't sell it to anyone because I know it will explode. I just wanna see what will happen.

I made a homemade hybrid for my cousin. Turbo-coupe t3 hotside ssautoandchrome cold side and he has been running it for over a year no probs.

Right in my original post I said I didnt want to put it on my car, also in my profile if you looked I already have an E3 16G, so no thanks on the 14B suggestion.

What measurement should I look for?

I used to have an AiResearch T3 on my SVO Mustang (OEM), was about the size of a 14B.
Check out TurboByGarrett for how to measure wheel sized/trim.

Also be sure that you know the condition of the turbo, as rebuilding could amount to $350 or more.

Thanks, Ill take some quick measurements of it when Im there, Im just looking to add it to my collection. Im gonna get it for $60, that is if the shaft play is minimal and the inside isnt soaked with oil.

Well, you made no mention of what you wanted it to do. Do you want it for a paperweight? Do you want it to make a turbine engine out of? Do you want to flip it to a Honda kid for 2x what you paid for it?

"just like to have for future" for future what? You don't know, then I don't know if it's worthwhile to bother with it :D

If it's a real garret hybrid turbo, and it has 0 shaft play, and it wasn't made by a monkey, those go for anywhere from $300-$600 depending on where you get it, and what parts have gone into it. It's only worth what someone else will pay for it though.

That is a great link, think I'll put that in my bookmarks.

Did you get an A/R from any of the housing castings?

BTW, I've got a full T4 that one could confuse for a hybrid if you've never seen one before. It also says AiResearch on the compressor cover. Not saying you don't know what a hybrid is, but it could be easy to get it confused. Phsyical size also does not denote how much air a turbo can move. Turns out the trim on the T4 is such that it's not a significantly better air mover than a super 60 or 70 standard T3 setup.

Can you take pictures of it?

Im thinking its a hybrid because the kid told me it was (If its not, then Im guessing its a T3). When I said it was for the future that means I wont be using it now in the present, I dont need a turbo now, but for $60 without any shaftplay I dont think I could pass that up, even if its going to be a heavy paperweight for now.:thumb:

Why do these say AiResearch on them anyways? Was it a line of turbos garrett made for some stock vehicles? Im gonna go look at it personally saturday and try to measure the turbine sides.

Does anyone now how that trim formula works from measuring the hot side turbine? Or is the hotside turbine a different ratio depending on what kind of turbo it actually is?

Cliff Garrett founded a company in 1936 which came to be known as Garrett AiResearch or simply AiResearch. Garrett AiResearch designed and produced a wide range of military and industrial products for aerospace and general industry. It focused on fluid controls and hydraulics, avionics, foil bearings, turbochargers, aircraft engines, environmental control systems for aircraft and spacecraft, and other products. In 1968, after a merger with Signal Oil, Garrett became part of Signal Companies. In the mid-1980s, Signal merged with Allied Chemical & Dye, and became AlliedSignal, becoming an automotive, aerospace and engineering company. The Garrett Aviation division was sold to General Electric in 1997 and is now part of Landmark Aviation. AlliedSignal merged with Honeywell in 1999, where the turbocharger business resides today.
