well to start out, my cousin has a 96 GS. he bought it with 90k on it and has done 0% maintenance on it whatsoever(except plugs and oil through mitsu, big ripoff), and it is now 135k on it. he says he is on his way to sacramento when he hears this ticking, so he keeps going for another hour till get gets there, he says it didnt get louder but didnt stop. then on his way home he hits the gas and boom he says the ticking just got super loud and wouldnt stop.

so he calls me and tells me to come over his car is making this weird noise. so i get there and have him start and and instantly there is this super loud tick coming from the pass side. i immediately told him to turn it off. i think he either spun a bearing or somethings messed up with something on the #1 piston side of the engine(closest to the tbelt).

if anyone has some tips on head removal feel free, also any help on what it could be. as of 2 tonight i had the valve cover and upper plenum off, as well as the ex man, though its being a bltch and wont budge even with no bolts on.
 
Well from wat your saying it sounds to me like the basic dsm problem, you had a leak in your head gasket so he was runnin low on oil causeing the oil to run low so it will start tapping when it gets low then get real loud cause there is no oil in it the gasket is like 600 with labor to get fixed but it sounds like he already ruined the engine.

to add to wat i said before its prolly his rods taping like that now so they might be bent :talon:
 
hah and i just checked the dipstick, zero oil. he says its been burning oil for a few months now. im hoping thats all he needs. didnt work on it tonight, but the head will be off soon.

p.s. i feel so out of my league with this dam chrysler engine.
 
Yea see its a common problem on the dsm n/t's its usually from the head gasket behind the engine but since its already tsapping loud the engine is prolly fried :talon:
 
yup the more i think about it the more i think its doneski.

and how the hell do i get the dam t-belt covers off? i cant seem to get the 2 middle bolts out cause theyre too long, i have the motor mount off.

we came to the conclusion its engine pulling time. so tomorrow morning my cousin gets to get at the suspension, then well unbolt the tranny and take out the whole engine, that way its just easier in the end. plus make for a really easy rebuild.

i hate this dam 420a.
 
it deff sounds like he blew a headgasket, mine had done this before and i took it to the mitsu dealer in central PA and they charged me like $675 they said that the previous material used to make the oem headgasket was weak and always broke so there is a new one that is used and it is suppose to not break now.
 
just a thought but did you do a compression test to see if it was the head gasket? I know you're gonna do a rebuild but I'm just wondering if the head gasket weakness is true cause I'm planning on turboing my nt and was thinking of replacing it with a new one while installing the turbo to prevent future problems.
 
well me and my cousin finally succeeded in dropping the engine. as of now it sits in the engine bay but on the ground, resting between the engine hoist legs. tomorrow we are going to borrow a neighbors car jack and lift both sides and drag it out from under the car, then tear it apart and have some fun. ill keep ya guys updated.
