Ok, my buddy has a 90 talon tsi fwd and this is the follow problems...

1. The car has fuel (we verified that, also has pressure)
2. The car has spark, we spark tested it.
3. The car has compression we did a compression test.

The problem we are having is it's not starting. We can't seem to figure out why, yes theres gas in it.

There was 1 thing that was out of the ordinary, and it's that when the cars turned completly off with the key out it makes this strange clicking noise right underneath the intake manifold and no it's not the ECU it's pretty much on the intake manifold. Not sure if this is an ignition problem or what? but theres a strange clicking. Also i think it may be the CAS. any help appreiciated, thanks.

The motor cranks over right.. but does not start?

If so and you have all those its timing... The clicking sounds sorta like your starter solenoid though..

Yeah it's wierd, the crank just keeps cranking over and over, but there is no start. It's not that low to be the starter solenoid i don't think and if it was that, how would it even crank? We already ripped the CAS off cuz we got a new one anyways it's got 120,000 on it. I just can't think what else it could be?!

you said you did a compression test so your motor obviously cranks over hehe.. my mistake.. Check your cam timing.. might explain the ticking noise too... piston/ valve loving... You have the 3 things you need spark fuel and compression (i guess you need air too but good luck losing that.. It's gotta be a timing problem.

That could be, should i just check to see if the marks are lined up?

Also What do you mean that could explain the clicking noise? what could the clicking noise have to do with the timing?

The clicking noise in the cam timing theory would be the piston on valve love (smacking). You can check if the cams are okay relative to each other buy making sure they meet timing marks in the middle.. (probably put a string between the 2 cam bolts to see if they meet in the exact middle) Not sure if you can check the relation to the crank without taking some stuff off. I forget.

The clicking is the ISC being reset on power off.
Check the Engine Coolant Temp sensor.

How long has the car been down and what lead up to the problem?

Steve

I figured it was the ISC, but what does that have to do with the CTS and that.

EDIT: i'm at work and i just got a call from him. It was the CAS, installed the new one and it fired right up. Thanks guys

At least I was helpful... :notgood: I dont even know what a CAS is.. Some sort of ignition module i guess? I should stay out of these threads LOL.

Actually the CAS must control the Ignition timing right.. It does have to be timing that was the problemm.. Valve or spark. I wasnt far off I guess LOL

LOL it's ok, when you said it was the valves hitting the pistons i was like WHAT?! LOL but i didn't want to say anything... :shhh:

The CAS (cam angle sensor) is responsible for syncing the fuel/spark to the timing. It is the triggering device on DSM's.

Don't worry we were all newbies once! :tease:
