Heres the story...
Couple months back ago my transmission differential gears blew up like a bomb was planted in it. Destroyed the bellhousing. Here in fl its hard to find 1g turbo dsm laying around in the junkyards.
So i decided to do the n/t transmission conversion. Pulled a trans from a 91 2.0L n/t. Did the whole n/t flywheel, starter plate, starter, and n/t racing clutch (luk performance gold) swap.
The install went smooth, only had problems with the shift cables not gettin into gears, or moving freely left to right, so i adjusted the cables from inside the car and that worked fine.

The Problem..
It goes into 1st through 5th and reverse fine..but when i try to take off in 1st it feels like im taking off in 3rd. Very hard to get it moving i would have to rev about 2.5k rpm and release the clutch pedal really slow to get a smooth start. If not it would jump/vibrate real crazy.
Not only that its so slow in revs that im going 60mph in 1st at 4k rpm!!(with the gas to the floor) Now i know theres no way 1st gear can go that high. When i go to 4th gear it feels like i just downshifted. Remember that it shifts 1 through 5th like a normal dsm would. Yeah im confused!

So the only thing that comes to mind is that i need to grab the shifter base and cables from the dsm that i pulled the trans from. So i went back to the junkyard/dsm unbolted everything when it came to pulling it. IMPOSSIBLE. the cables wont come off the shifter base and the bracket that holds the cables together in the engine bay does not come off?? At this point im frustrated, called my mechanic and he said that the cables will not come off that car, and that he has to modify my cables so they can reach out longer to get into the gears.

My questions..
How do you guys remove all the cables and shifter assembly?? Or is it true about what my mechanic said?
When i did my cable adjusments, i adjusted the bolts (not sure what there called) all the way towards the end where u connect the cables to the shifter.
But if was to adjust the cable that goes into gear towards the top, will that help it get into the right gear??
i live like 30 mins from my mechanics shop so i parked my car at a near by freinds house just in case i dont mess anything up driving home.
Can anyone give me ideas/advice on what my next move should be, or point me to the right direction??
Im out of ideas and starting to see what my mechanic can do i just wanted to wait to see what you guys would say.
Thanks in advance for your time and help!

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, as long as you are using the 91 cables, shifter base and tranmission brackets (both little ones), you should be able to select the gears no problem. That is granted the cables are not broken.

The bad news? The n/t trannies are weak. 3rd gear especially is made of play-doh. A few n/t -> turbo guys I know have stripped the teeth right off both gears for third.

Thats the problem that im having my dsm is a 90 model. Sorry that i left that out.
im just so confused on how some of you guys removed the whole shifter assemblies, when they did the swap.

And yeah i read up on how there weak, but i plan on not drag racing my dsm hardcore or anything like that.
this is my only car and i just wanted up and running.
thanks for your reply.

Ok like this picture from vfaq. I would like to know how you remove the cables from the ones that are circled red. seems like a pain the ass.
