Hi, I have a 97 gs-t and just had a walbro 190 fuel pump and SBR small 16g turbo installed. I am also in the process of getting a 1g bov, turbo timer, and mbc. As you can tell this car is relatively new to me and so is upgrading. Within the month I am going to upgrade my injectors to 550cc and then get a S-AFC to control the fuel. I also have a catback exhaust and intake, which I am not sure impact my ability to turn boost up, but I though I would add them just in case. I am wondering what boost I can safely run without doing injectors and the S-AFC and then also what boost I can run once I do the injectors and S-AFC. Haha sorry about making this a two question thread, but I thought I might as well kill two birds with one stone and save my self a post in the near future. Any help anyone could give me would be great, thank you

I dont have a datalogger and would love to be able to afford a larger intercooler, but it's not quite in my budget yet. In about a couple of days I am going to be purchasing a boost gauge, mbc and turbo timer. Is a data logger the next step? If so where can I get a good data logger used for cheap and what is a fair price for one?

datalogger should have been your first step. I would think about getting it very soon. We can tell you all day what you need to run/should run, but the only real way to see how your car is handling the mods is to datalog it.

Your doing everything out of order. I wouldn't put on the 550's before the SAFC. Your car will run like total trash if you have 550's in there without the SAFC.

I'd suggest you rewire your fuel pump, run 13lbs then wait till you get that SAFC then put on those 550's and get yourself a FMIC and run 20lbs.

If the FMIC's are out of budget for you, then get an ebay core for $160 and get some custom pipes.

I was planning to make my next purchase 550 injectors AND a safc at the same time and puting both in at once and if I had to do one over the other I would do the safc first because I understand that you have to monitor your fuel before you begin upgrading the injectors. My question is if I just do the datalogger before I do the injectors and the safc.

If you upgrade the BOV, Fuel Pump, I/c Pipes, blah blah all the beginning mods, then you could probably run about 13-15psi pretty safely. Look at the classifieds section here and DSmTRADER.com as well as Ebay for good datalogger sets. Make sure the datalogger is installed ASAP and definitely before you start messing with the SAFC. YOu mentioned a Catback but I didn't hear anything about a downpipe? YOu will need one too or else it will become a big restriction and you won't be making as much power as you should.

the problem with a downpipe and high flow cat is that I live in NY and this car is a daily driver that has to pass emissions and I would just replace everything with oem parts, but I am at college and the car stays at home and my parents take it to pass emissions since it is occassionally used by them. So I am doing other things such as datalogger, safc, injectors... before messing with anything that would cause me to not pass emissions. This is not to say I wont be doing it though, I plan by the end of july having a downpipe.

Whatever, that actually doesn't sound like such a good idea but it's your car. The problem with that is that you will be doing your tuning/fuel mods to gain power and make the car run nicer, but with such high restrictions coming from your exhaust, you really could end up with even more problems and for sure you won't gain much power. Even if you do just do the fuel mods to pass emmissions, adding a lot of fuel makes you run really rich and for sure if you are running rich you most likely won't pass emmissions. Just put in the Hi-flow cat with your setup and you have a good chance of passing...If not, then you don't pass and you take it out, PASS, then put it back on...It's not the end of the world if you don't pass the first time

Ok, I realized that emmissions is not worth losing this much power so I plan on getting a high flow cat asap. I also plan on getting a safc asap, is this absolutely appropiate at this stage of my tuning?

I think so...There really is no reason why you should be adding fuel and tuning mods to your car without first having a full exhaust...Also a datalogger which is also important...I went on Ebay and found kits utilizing the well known mmcd program that also comes with all the necessary cables and a Palm all for $70. The guy is a powerseller when it comes to dataloggers so I don't think he would cheat you, it would ruin his rep. I don't need to tell you where to get a downpipe b/c a blind man could find one of those on the internet without trying...But, if you're still looking for a Cat, Trader and Classifieds ^^^ sell those all the time...Yesterday I saw a deal for a new 3" magnaflow HI-FLO cat for only $100, not the lowest but it gives you an idea

Check out the tech guide section of this website, and you will see an idea of how to do this. You don't have to follow it exactly, but it does lay down a decent guideline.

Upgrading your intake and exhaust will give you some of the best performance upgrades when you begin to tune your car. It needs to breath, if you restrict it with a stock air filter and air box, followed with that tiny stock downpipe, your engine can not breath. Your EGT's will be higher, your turbo will take longer to spool, and compared to a car with the same mods, except he upgraded the intake and exhaust, you will definitely notice a difference.

I just got my car back from the shop with the walbro 190 fuel pump and small 16g turbo and I was told by the mechanic who put them in that I should not push the car because without a safc I am able to monitor and control the fuel and could blow the engine. I called slowboy racing where I purchased the turbo and found out that I am running anywhere from 10 to 12 psi so my question right now is an safc more important than a data logger at this point? when buying the high flow cat, I want to buy a datalogger or a safc and want to know which is the best to buy first???? thank you for all of your help so far, it is really helping me learn more about the car.

It just doesnt seem like you were listening ...Without trying to be mean, I'm telling you right now, You will NEED them both...If you don't have the $$$ then stop making a shop install the parts, do the easy installations yourself, that way you will be saving a couple hundred bucks right there. I mean in retrospec, you should get the datalogger first I guess, but don't expect anything to happen!! You will need it for the SAFC so the smartest thing to do is to have them both.
- If you just get the SAFC then you won't know what to tune for or what the tuning is doing to your engine, by just tuning the SAFC then yes you could blow your engine. But, if you only get a datalogger, you will know exactly what is going on in your engine but what is the use, you won't be able to do anything about it until you get a tuning device. Just follow the mod list we have explained to you, keep the boost low for now since you decided to jump into a turbo upgrade so fast, and start making money cause otherwise your car will run like hell and you won't have the $$$ to fix it :nono:

I was listening and I understand that I have to to them at the same time, but what i am trying to say is that i have about 200 dollars or so to spend as of right this second and I am curious of what I should get next. I could wait and save and get everything and will do so if that is the best thing to do. That is why I am on this forum. I plan on doing all of the installations my self from now on, but was not comfortable doing the turbo by my self when I am still learning about the car. The only reason I got a larger turbo was because my t25 was not spooling correctly and already had 100,000 miles on it and I could have easily gotten another one, but did not want to spend the money to replace my turbo with the same small turbo and thought I could use this as an opportunity to put a slightly larger turbo in the car and give my self something to work with. I plan on getting the parts in order at this point. I am thinking of saving my money and all at once getting a high flow cat, safc, logger and if I am lucky, a cheap used fmic... I have looked at the dsmtuners tech guide and believe that I am following the guide correctly, if anyone has any input on things that I have not listed and believe are important I would appreciate your input and I am sorry if my ignorance is upsetting anyone, I promise I am trying to learn more and am reading other forums to learn more about dsms. ;)

It's ok, there's no need to get too worked over by the replies, just remember that without the logger you can not tune your car. You need it to tune the car, without it you will be tuning blind.
