Ok I purchased new tires all around about 9 months ago and about a week ago one of my tires fell victom to a nyc pot hole. I took it to a local tire shop to put on a emergency used tire. My question is because my car is awd and you need to have even tire thread all around cause you could kill your tranny does that mean I have to buy a new set of tires or just get another one that matches the tread depth of the other 3 tires?

you can buy just one tire but it has to be the same circumference as the other three tires.example=if you 245's on the car now you need to buy a 245 not a 205.get the same size as the other three.its like wearing a boot on one foot and a tennis shoe on the other foot.hope this helps.

I understand that part about it having to be the same size. Sorry I didn't explain that but will the little tire wear that the other 3 tires have be enough to destroy my trans if I were to buy the same brand and size tire as the rest?

if you only had the tires for 9 months then you will be fine unless you put 20,000 miles on them already.that little bit of wear wont hurt it.just get a new tire and you will be good to go.

The bit about if you have 245's get 245's is not necessarily correct. But ya keep the same size tires. 245 and a 205 could be the same height tire as long as the aspect ratio's allow them to be. Aspect ratio is the second number on a tire. 205/"55"/VR16 It tells you how tall the side walls of the tires is by taking 55% of 205 millimeters in this case. The wall would be around 111 millimeters. And a 245/45/VR16 would have a sidewall of 110.6 millimeters. So basically a 205/55 would be the same height tire as a 245/45. Thus making the theory of a 245 and a 205 not havin the same circumfrence incorrect. Both tires could run on a AWD at the same time and not hurt a thing.

So basicaly your saying .4 millimeters difference in one tire is nothing to worry about and wont affect your trans?

Yes that is what I am saying. There would be more of a difference in the circumfrence of the tire if there was a difference of 1 to 2 psi in the tire.

Believe me, I have taken 2 years of education in Automotive Technology. And my first year all my studys dealt with anything I wanted. So I did alot of research on all wheel drive systems. And with the viscous couplers in these transmissions you can have as much as a 7 degree turn difference (between front and rear) before anything will start to destruct. But I would not recommend it in any way shape or form. Haha
