Hey everyone, I started up my car after about 2 weeks and it started up fine. I was out cleaning up the snow and my friend in the car was laying the music system really really loud (around 700 RMS). When I went back I saw a voltage drop on the cap and it kept going down n down. I turned off all the electricals (stero, fan, lights). I had to drive the car to my new apt ... but the voltage kept dropping. I had the battery replaced about a year ago and it seems to be ok ... but the alternator isn't charing it.

I searched to forum and I'm going to get them both tested. But just in case, if I do need an alternator, how many amps should I get? I guess the stock is about 75 amps.

my lights do dim a bit when I play the music really loud or when the bass hits hard. What do you guys think of the following High Output Alternator:

I charged the battery a bit with my friend's car andnow the car starts up fine. Although the battery, brake and coolant lights were still dimmly lit.

I called Autozone, they are selling a 75 amp rebuilt alternator for $104 + core. They said they can only test my alternator if its out of the car. So as suggested in some of the posts in the forum I removed the negative terminal of the battery and the engine died. So I'm assuming its the alternator?

Should I get the cheap autozone alternator or should I go with the high output one with double the price?

Thanks

If you're sure all wiring is good, it sounds like it's the alternator. I would just remove it and have autozone test it. The 90 amp one shouldn't cost twice as much though, I would check out some of the internet parts vendor first. It sounds like you can use the 90 amps too with that 700w rms system of yours.
