1G Alternator replaced causes idle surge?

My alternator stopped working the other day so i replaced it but the car wouldn't idle for longer then 5 minutes so i brought the battrey to orileys and they charged it overnight. After reinstalling the battery the car now has idle surge between 1000 to 1500 rpm.
