My 90 gsx has been having some alternator failures in the last couple months, I just recently replaced my alternator with a brand new auto lite from kragen just yesterday and seems to be failing again....the symtoms are that my check engine light, battery light, and brake light stay on while im driving the car, then after a couple mins more of driving all my running lamps, headlights, and dash lights start to dim until finally my car completely dies. after i installed the new alternator the car ran normally and the check engine, battery, and brake lights were no longer on while i drove the car. today after driving home from work, the lights came on again while i was driving and i have a feeling that the alternator is going to go out again really soon.....anyone have any ideas to what could be causing my alternator to keep failing....?

Hey, I just recently went through the same thing you are. Did you buy your alternator from Autozone or the like? because they sell remanunfactured ones that sometimes don't last very long. So it's a good idea to get a new one from the dealer. There are a few other things that could be causing this: Power steering fluid could be leaking onto your alternator, thats bad, and would cause this. Or if you've got the heatshield off of your o2 housing that could be part of the problem, because alternators don't hold up well to heat. hopefully I've helped out and good luck getting it fixed.

My rebuilt replacement alternator has gone out 4 times in the past 2 months. Cheap ass parts is all it is. Just take it back, get another, and try again. If you don't get a good result after about 2 or 3 tries, then start to check out the cars electical system. You dont have a Wastegate dumping on or close to the alternator do you? Thats how I killed one of mine, now fixed!

my friend with a 94 turbo'd civic had the same problem when he went to autozone.. he replaced it once and at high rpm the idiot light would blink and i think it blew couple of fuzes.. he took it back and got another one for what was supposed to be the same car and when we put them side by side they looked completely different.. yet for the same car.. his new one works fine though.. sometimes you just get a bad rebuilt one.. just go back to the parts store and ask for another.. it shouldnt cost you anything..
