Alternator fuse keeps blowing

Me and my buddy just recently rebuilt his motor for his 97 GSX. We went to start the car but it wouldn't crank over. It sounded like it wanted to, but nothing. So we looked at things that could be wrong and we noticed the alternator fuse was blown. So he got another one and as soon as he connective the negative on the battery, the fuse blew. We went through three fuses. Anyone got any suggestions? We want this car started!

Fried the alternator? Sounds like it is creating a dead short.

is it an aftermarket alternator? I had the same problem with my 1G. i went though 3 fuses before i figured out what was wrong. The after market ones have the ground wire in a diffrent place then the stock alternator. It still have the whole the stock one has for it but it should have a sign next to where it should go. Mine had this round plastic thing by it. Its worth a shot looking to see if that is what the problem is. When i had it set up wrong every time i put the battery cabel on i would see an arch hear electricty then see the fuse blow if you just touch the cabel to the terminal with out puting it on you should get very little sparks. If it is hooked up wrong you will get alot of spark.

it anything touching the + term on the alt ? ( there is suposed to be a protective boot on it )

The alternator is the original one I believe. Everything seems to be away from the alternator too. That was one of the first things we looked at. Omega, you think the alternator is bad? Thanks for the suggestions guys. We will try them out.
