So the other day my alternator belt snapped while on my way home, and I had my brother tow it home for me. When I got home i threw on a new belt and it started right up and all the lights went off, but now the battery is just draining. Is there anyway that I could have killed my alternator? Or is the battery just fried.

Yes, check your voltage at the battery terminals with the car running. It should be about 14 volts. Some part stores will check you alternator but you have to remove it.

I would check the alternator with a volt meter at idle, and then under a load. Sometimes its fine at idle, but fluncuates to much either way under a load. What caused the snapped belt? Old belt? to tight? Too tight can wreak havoc on your alternator.

well i checked the battery with a volt meter after having the charger on for about 10 hours and it read 12.43 and just started to slowly drop when i took it off. the alternator at idle is 12.43. the reasoning for the belt snapping was odd to me i was getting on the highway and went to shift into 4th and went into second for about a second, it was weird to me because the syncros are so bad to the point in second where i cant normall downshift into gear.

You can use your safc to see if the alternator is putting anything out. It is likely that the alternator has died however, since you say the battery is draining.

well the alternator is less then a year old and i still have a warranty but how do i check that with the safc

If at idle your battery terminals are only reading 12.43v, then your alternator is not outputting what it should be (ideal 14.4v, preferred 14v minimum). If it's still under warranty then getting it swapped out shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck!

I agree, replace the alternator !!

Yo, i have the exact same problem...!! My OEM alternator died, i bought another one from autozone and a new belt. Car was driving fine for a few days untill the new belt snapped! idk if a new belt expands or sumthing, But i had to go back and re -tighten the newer belt i had to buy Again..!!

NoW the Freak'in battery is Draining!! the car can stay ON with the alternator running it, But the alternator wont charge the battery!! i get 13.7v with just the alternator, if i rev it.... it'll go past 14v, If i hook the battery terminals up, i stay below 13.5 and rev stays the same.

What's wrong!!
