I came home from work (I worked night shift last night) and I woke up and my dad sells me something broke on my car. (He takes it ocasionally and rips it and it makes me mad.) Well I went out to inspect the damage and it looks like one of my belts are snapped. I turned it on and it has no p/s, the batt light is on and if i look in the engine bay, the only moving belt is the t-belt. Another thing I noticed that scared me was I had NO coolant! wtf?

Idk what your really asking, just replace the alt belt and ps belt. No coolant? It could have been low, I would fill it back up and see what is going on from there. hope this helps

So...I can't get the bolt loose where the alternator is so I went to get wd40 at advanced and i picked up a jug of coolant too. I came homwe and I was able to dump the whole thing into the car...I'm really worried. Do you guys think I have a blown HG? I asked my dad more about it and he said he never once checked the temp gauge or anything. he drove ~10mi and he said when he got home it was blowing a lot of steam/smoke out of the engine bay. I'm so jacked right now I could kill him.

Lol no, you had your water pump fail. Your timing belt should be replaced if it hasn't been in a while or you don't know when it was last done. To access the water pump you will already be by the timing belt. If you don't know what you are doing on the timing 110% take it to someone who has worked on DSMs. I don't care if your friend is a mechanic of 10,000 years DSMs timing likes to fail if someone who has never worked on it before attempts it.

The reason why your belts broke is because your water pump pulley is all loose and dangley right now. You could be safe on the HG also. I had mine go and had to drive it home 18 miles. The steam is more than likely coming from the over flow. If he was even remotely smart he would think of not getting on it which could help save the gasket.

If you decide to not replace the timing belt you risk bending valves and destroying pistons.

best way to figure out everything is put coolant in till stops taking it and make sure you don't see it leaking out anywhere. Then start it up with the heat of full blast and let it run for a bit. Check the level again and watch the temp gauge. If it over heats with a good coolant level then you have either a warped head or blown head gasket.

My water pump pulley didnt have any play in it when it went out. It sounded like the bearings were grinding on each other tho...pretty easy to tell mine was going out by the sound.

The belt that snapped is your serpentine belt that runs the power steering, alternator, and water pump. Don't drive the car until you get a new belt. Otherwise, your water pump will not be recirculating coolant. And your battery will eventually lose charge. It's an easy fix.[/QUOT what kind of car? dont believe the 4g63 uses a serpentine belt its 3 separate belts. one that runs from the crank to the water pump and the alternator (sounds like that one broke) one that runs from the water pump to the power steering pump and on that runs from the crank to the a/c compressor. i say if sounds like you broke the alternator belt ### if that one broke you lose the alternator the power steering and the water pump all at once. the power steering belt may still be there but wont move because its only hooked to the waterpump pully. which uses the alternator belt and crank to move. if you look at you water pump the outside belt is the alternator belt wich runs down to the crank the one on the inside is a shorter one that just runs the powersteering.

The water pump/alternator and a/c belts are serpintine belts, the p/s is a v-belt.

P.S. proper grammar really helps.

Its funny because you could just replace the belt and see if everything is all good oooorrr uu could replace all the belts. Which means you need 2 new tbelts which means you need a new tensioner which means you might as well do the hg which means you need new head bolts which means you might as well check the springs and valves and do your stem seals and new lifters and blah blah blah. Just try a new serpentine belt unless you want to spend 500 more bucks for everything else.

How could you possibly be certain of any of this based upon what was said in this thread?

Be careful not to pass off theory and speculation as facts of certainty.

Sorry about that where I'm from we don't call those serpentine belts we just call then what they are I.e. power steering belt. If I was to call up the local parts shop and ask for a serpentine belt they'd ask me which one I needed. Didn't mean to cause any undo confusion.

The steam was probaly from the overflow boiling over. One way to check for a blown HG, is by opening the radiator cap, and seeing if bubbles come out, or if it pushes coolant out, I've seen both.

It overheated because your alt belt/ water pump belt broke and your low on coolant because your water pump was not turning so therefore you will loose alot of coolant because it turns into steam. Replace the belt replinish your coolant and see what happens.
