Alternator belt grinding on timing belt case!!

Hello,
I heard a belt squeaking, and I just now had my car running, and it squeaks for like 20-30 seconds when i start it up and the squeaking is VERY loud. I looked and the alternator belt (belt right of timing?) was grinding on the timing belt case, the black thing on the outside, there is already about a 1/8th groove into the timing belt case. I guess the whole alternator sprocket is pushed a little to the left which I bet is because the dealer changed the power steering pump and messed something up...


Can I pull the timing belt cover off and run it like that, is it safe, will it hurt the timing belt, etc.

The belt squeals for a while because it is loose. As it slips it gets hot and then catches and is quiet. This is bad for the belt. The timing cover has lost some small mounting bolts. This allows it to move into the belt. You never want to run with out a timing cover. If any trash gets caught between the belt and a gear will cause the timing to jump. Do some searches on timing belt failures and jumped timing.
 
There is one bolt missing on the far backside of the case, is that what is causing it?
 
I would replace the bolt on the rear it could be letting the cover warp out into the belt. Also check for proper tension on the belt. And is it the power steering belt or the alt? My power steering is behind my alternator belt near timing belt cover.
 
Not sure, what do you have? Probably could be power steering too, I know the dealer replaced the power steering pump.
 
94 eclipse with 92 laser turbo motor
Definatly check the power stearing. Mine shares the pully with the water pump behind the alternator pully.
