Today I was replacing my altenator and everything went fine untill the end. I noticed a wire coming from the plug that goes into the altenator was not connected to anything and i cannot find another wire where it might have broken from. Everything else is hooked up but i dont want to start the car up with it just hanging out there. If anyone could help me out that would be great. Thanks :talon:

Can't see/distinguish too well, but there are 2 possible locations. 1: pressure switch on top of the power steering pump. Has a female connector w/a boot.
2: Should have a ring and goes connected to that post with the nut on the alternator.
I think I see the wire that goes to the pressure switch connected on top of the pic though.

A picture of the end of that wire (the connector) would be much more valuable than the pic you have posted.

And the 2 ideas posted above are about the two only options.

This is the aforementioned power steering plug.

Does it have a ring connector on the end of this one wire, or is it bare? If it has the ring on the end of it, that's the 12v feed from the battery that attaches to the corresponding threaded post on the back of the alternator.

the other is that harness that has the plug that goes into the socket behind the alternator.

Hope you didn't pull a wire out of that plug.... - DSM

It is just a bare wire like it was pulled out, that is all that it is connected to, the end towards the fan is the side i dont know where it goes. I will post pic with more info. You cant see the end of it, but its not very long maybe about 8inches. Oh and sry forgot to metion its a 91 talon tsi if that matters.:talon:

Oh and no it does not have the ring, thats in, and im thinking it might be from a plug, hope not but the end of it like i said is bare wire like it was pulled out of something. If it is part of the plug could i just pull one off another car and splice it in?

Pull the plug off the alternator and see if their is a blank space being the plug that maybe this wire would attach to...the metal tang would be still attached to the plug.

review question: do you have the wire with the ring on it attached to the alternator?

No, you didn't pull the wire out of the plug. I have 2 1g's like that where they are both not attached to anything and run fine. But I've been wondering where they plug into as well.

Ok, I still cant figure this out... :banghead: I got some better pictures now, and im going to try just starting the car like someone said, i just cant imagine why it would be there if I did not need it, if anyone could confirm this that would be great as well. :talon:

And the wire does look weatherd like maybe it has not been hooked up in a long time.

(Had to go outside and look at my setup to compare..) Yep, that's the grounding wire that attaches to the power steering pump. If you look on the pump, there is a point that looks like a connection goes to. This is where it needs to go.
