I just bought a cone air filter for my 99 GS-T, and I have 2 problems

1) the stock air box has a black pipe that goes into the passenger fender, but when I took the box out, the pipe seemed loose and not connected to anything. Is that pipe connected to my resaonator? And what do I do with the pipe, if I want to put a cone filter in?

2) The air box was connected to a square hook-up (sorry i'm new to tuners), how do I fit the cone filter on the hook-up?

You need to buy the rest of a kit. Usually, you remove the entire filter box from the mass airflow sensor (MAS...the thing with the plug coming out the back) and bolt up a filter to the MAS. The snorkel that goes between the filter box and the fender is where the stock air filter gets its intake air...through the fender. An aftermarket filter gets its air from under the hood.

Typical K&N cone filter kits have everything you need including a washable filter element. There are also kits on ebay that will work with our cars, and they are usually cheaper than the K&N but without a reputation.

If you do install a cone filter, one negative side effect is that the air under the hood is much hotter than the air taken from the fender, so your intake temperatures go up (20 degrees is common). Many will make a dam that segregates the filter area from the rest of the engine bay, and others who have front-mount intercoolers will take air from where the stock side-mount used to be (called a cold air intake). I'm not sure which wins out with a cone filter, the hotter air or the increased air flow.

so what should I do with the pipe going from my air box to the fender?

should i just go with a short ram intake instead, it seems more logical

Doesn't it just stick into the oval-shaped hole in the fender? If you want to upgrade to a cone filter, the whole filter box and that tube between it and the fender would be removed; you have to remove them to put the cone filter in, but it sounds like you only have the filter but not the adapter that lets you connect it to the MAS. Look at my avatar picture to the left of this post. See the filter? No box.

Get a MAF adapter that fits your air filter. Measure the diameter of the inlet on your filter and buy the corresponding adapter. Don't worry...they are inexpensive.

as for the tube that goes down behind your fender...no need to worry about that. Leave it as is. I do recommend getting a hardpipe from eBay though. You will enjoy it a whole lot more. It will come with the adapter you need, couplings for the hardpipe, clamps, new hoses, and a brand new air filter as well. Only issue I see with the ebay intakes are they come with odd sized couplers so get some quality ones at your local auto parts store. Bring your pipe with you and they will set you up with what you need.

I recommend this kit because I think it looks the best but there are so many others out there..just search.
