I'm looking for advice on upgrading the dinky brakes on my '90 GSX to the Brembos off of an EVO VIII.

My friend is selling his setup because he's switching to smaller Brembo Group N homologated units. The stock brakes are too big for the 15" gravel-spec rally rims he wants to run in rallycross.

Any way, I'm having my GSX looked at this weekend to possibly fabricate custom brake brackets.

Do you guys have any advice? Has this been done before? Do brackets for this already exist? Will I lose the use of my handbrake? How will brake bias (non-ABS) be affected? Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I made a set for Nissan 300ZX fixed 4 calipers. If you have wood working tools, I recommend making an adapter out of wood (maple) to check the fit. You must look at several clearances with the caliper & rotor on the car including:

1. inside of wheel-rim to caliper.
2. wheel spider to caliper.
3. knuckle bosses to caliper bosses (inboard-outboard and clock position)
4. Rotor to caliper clearance (2 mm radial)
5. Caliper centered on rotor (new pads)
6. Rotor to knuckle/strut
7. Rotor to lower ball joint
8. New splash sheild? or ditch it...Aluminum sheild would be nice.

Take measurements on your current brake package (to these components) then measure your new components. MAKE DRAWINGS!

It is not real difficult, but if you are new to mechanical drawing, measuring, and stack-ups get ready to make a second set when the first set doesn't fit right.

An option may be to do the fronts only since 1g's have integral parkbrakes on their calipers.

Your brake balance shouldn't be too far off, the cars aren't drastically different in weight or weight distribution. You could search for the piston size F/R for both cars and compare F/R piston ratios (2x F-piston area/ R-piston area) (yes only two). If you measure the piston diameter becareful since the dustboot may mask the hydraulic diameter.

aside from the points already here, I think your biggest issue will be ensuring that you have enough space behind your current wheels. The evo brembo's are very big.

Aside from that, if you make a set for all four wheels, and not just the fronts, and don't mind sharing the info, i'd love to have the brackets (either made, or just the design so i can have them cut).

Thanks everyone! I'll keep you posted on my progress. The car is scheduled for the conversion right after the New Year.

slugsgomoo: Right on, I have a set of the EVO VIII Enkei rims I'll be using for fitment. I believe the offsets are much the same.

bjones18: Thanks for all of the advice. The wood block mockup idea will definitely help. I'm intent on swapping both the front and back brakes so we'll try to retrofit a handbrake drum solution.

Street Surgeon: I'm sure Mike@Sublime would be more than willing to make copies of the brackets. I'd check evoM for someone selling their stock Brembos -- there's always some track guy upgrading to a defense budget setup.

Anyhow, once the brackets are made, I'll post pictures, specs, etc. I'll also take a stab at making mechanical drawings -- it's been awhile since I've done drafting.

im interested in this since my friend with a evo 8 just upgraded...info :D

Given how he's down in asia, I'm going to assume that he swapped the main hub/suspenion section for a Mitsubishi Legnum VR4's, which directly bolt up. They're slightly more spaced than our 2G caliper mounts and bolt up to the Brembos like nothing.

Given the absolute PIA for replacing our wheel bearings, I'd rather have a bracket made than replacing the entire hub arm.

Ok, first you need to get 99 Galant's knuckles, if you r car has ABS, you will need to get ABS sensor, too. And you can use your hub.
For the brembo kit. You need F/R calipers, F/R roters and F/R brake pads.
You also need a set of wheel that can fit those calipers. I am using EVO5 or 6 wheel. Thanks

I KNOW this is off subject but that is the cleanist 1g i ever saw defiently a cover car

The rear Brembos are a direct fit.

You'd have to measure if the '99 US Galant knuckles are any different.

I want to say no, due to the fact that they would've updated them on the 99 Eclipse as well.

On further research, 99 Galants have struts up front, not a front multilink, so they couldn't have come off a '99 Galant.
