adding turbo to stock n/t motor

i think for the time being i will only have enough money to either rebuild my motor and bore it out with forged rods and pistons, or place a turbo on it. I was wondering if i went ahead and turboed it stock, if i would run into many problems. also, which would provide more power/speed, the rebuild or turbo.
thanks for the help/reccomendations on what i should do.
 
That depends on the level of power you want to make eventually. If you are happy with a good boost then turbo it now. However if eventually you want to put some serious numbers for horsepower then go through and do the entire rebuild

well first off i dont really have the option of getting a new car. secondly the motor on mine only has 30,000 miles on it, that is also a reason why i dont want a new car. third, eventually i do want do run a lot of boost, but for now i dont have the money to do so, thought i would but dont. so would it tear up my motor very bad to run a turbo at around 8 psi?
 
I think 5-6 psi on stock internals would be safe, 8 would be pushing it.

Then again if you beat the hell out of it anyway it won't matter.

^ dude, I know you're a newbie and all, but seriously. I'm sure the thought of that has crossed his mind, and like he said it's not an option. It crossed all of our minds, and if he was considering it he would have said should I turbo mine, or sell it and buy a turbo?

If you turbo your car, your motor will eventually go, it's just a matter of when. Many things come into the picture as to how long it will take.
As long as you run it safely, you should be fine for awhile, especially considering you only have 30k on the motor.
Be sure to have your fuel system down, injectors, afpr and fuel pump(walbro 255).
You will need something to monitor and tune with, I would get atleast a pocketlogger and SAFC 1 or 2, and take the car and have it tuned.

If you get it tuned you should be pretty good off at 7 or 8 psi for awhile, but it's still a car, and anything can happen.

To sum it all up, whichever you do first is up to you, turbo, or rebuild, but if you turbo eventually you will rebuild. If you rebuild, you will want to turbo, knowing that you can. :thumb:
 
If you truly want to eventually make big boost then I would definitely do the rebuild with better rods and forged low compression pistons first. I have learned that hard way that it is cheaper to do it right the first time. You can always save up for the turbo after the rebuild at least then you will know that the engine is capable of handling the extra power a turbo makes. Also realize that you will need to upgrade the fuel system with bigger injectors, fuel pump. You will also need a upgraded clutch because the factory n/t clutch won't hold up very long to the power you will be making with a turbo. :talon:
 
you have to ask yourself a question. do you feel luck??? do ya? :sneaky:

if the car is your only mode of transportation then i would think about turboing before the rebuild. if you have another car then go for it!!!! make sure you have the fuel system to go with the turbo. do some reading on this web site and 2gnt.com. turboing the car can be done for well under 1500 and you can build your motor for about that aswell. the problem with running big boost on the 420a is engine management. i am built strong but only running 8 psi. good luck on whatever you do.
 
ok well i think that i am going to turbo my motor for the time and run it at low boost-below 8 psi. but why would you only run 8 psi on a built motor? when i build mine i will run it at 15 psi. Also, where are you getting your motor built at $1500? just for eagle rods and wiseco pistons its going to run me about $2300 to rebuild. That is including a new water pump, all seals and gaskets, head studs, and crankshaft work. Finally, which turbo is better; 16g or t3/t4 hybrid?

Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm in almost the same boat you are, but i've decided to put my money towards turbo charging my 95 GS first. This way i'm planning on it being around 160-180 ish hp (rough estimate) at 4-5 lbs of boost. I figured this way i could enjoy my 1400 some odd bucks i spent relativly fast and still be safe on my stock engine (i heard stock they are good for about 230 ponys, not sure if thats true though), then later i plan on getting a rebuild and beefing it up for some more boost, but thats a ways off,,

What ever you choose to do good luck with it,,,keep us posted on how the build up is coming along,, i'd be interested in seeing what direction you go with it, Peace :thumb:
