Ok well since i have had nothing but problems with my ACT 2600 (broken spring,) i am currently in the market for a new clutch kit. I liked the ACT when it worked, but to many people are having spring problems for me to buy another one. So i started looking into the differant clutch kits available for the DSM..... there is actual alot of options out there:
ACT
Clutch Masters
Exedy
HorsepowerFreaks
RPS
South Bend Clutch
SPEC
Unorthodox
all can be found at http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/

and now the SlowBoy Racing clutch is available... http://www.slowboyracing.com/shop.php?sid=&cat=1077

Out of all the differant kits available, i was looking into the Slowboay racing, and the South Bend DXD clutch kits.

http://www.dxdracingclutches.com/home.html

Now, i know the SBC's have been used in supras and what not for a while, and have worked out very well, so i dont see why it be any differant in a DSM.....But SlowBoy Racing, just came out with there own clutch kits that look damn good. The thing i like about the SBR clutch kit, is that it also comes with a heat sink. Not sure on how functional it is, but it sure sounds like a good idea... especialy for thoes running alumn. flywheels.

Well i want to hear others opinions on these clutch kits mentioned here, so others like myself have something to referance to for something other than ACT.

I bought an exedy cerametallic clutch kit from pro street. before i got a chance to install it my turbo went out. so a friend of mine that has been through two act 2600's and had nothing but problems with it offered to buy it off my so I can get a turbo sooner. Well it's currently on his car and he says he loves it so much more then the act's he's had. His name on here is RoasT BeeF send him a pm if you have any questions or want a review.

I have tried launching it on the street a couple times... It feels awesome and lauches good. However, with the cold weather and cold roads I can't get it to launch good on the street at all, absolutely no traction at all. Makes for some fun driving though... 2nd gear awd powerslides anyone? I do feel i'll be able to launch it real well at the track though.

Im glad you chimmed in... I was wondering if you could go a little more in depth about your new clutches and pressure plate. And im also really interested in that backing plate. Have you done before and after temp testing? how do you have a no break in period? And do you still use the Mitsu TOB?

Called up competition clutch, they can't provide me with any before and after temperature testing for this model. They told me they have used it in other clutches with a lot of success and that there main reason for putting in on the kit even though we didn't ask for it is that a clutches biggest enemy is heat. (made sense to the cragger, but there are no hard numbers)

Break in period is less than any other clutch on the market because the material on the disc is flat out not as hard so it does not need time to seat in, say "500 miles of easy driving". Now i'm not telling you to install it and go bust out a sideways launch because there is no break in, it just takes a few miles of crusing before the clutch is ready.

We also made sure that the center hub has twice as many rivets as an ACT center.

The disc is a lot softer material then what ACT uses. This is why the disc is more shatter resistant and breaks in quicker. It will last just as long as an ACT street disc as well. We have been testing (a.k.a. Trying to break) these clutch setups in our own cars, on the dyno etc. and we are very happy.

exedy make anything for ACT?

I only know this by accident, the ACT clutch kit for the Evo 8 has EXEDY stamped right on the pressure plate and the street disc.

thanks for answering that question. You both just sold me on the Slow Boy clutch. Since i have had nothing but bad luck with ACT, i want nothing to do with Exedy as well (seeing how thats who makes them.)

I just wish there were more people out there with the SBR clutch to chime in for reviews (no offence SlowboyCSE.)

Thank you very much for your response to my questions. I really appreciate that you took time out to call them up and ask. Your clutch kit sounds like its gonna be the new top dog for the DSM...also, ...sorry to nag.. but are you using/recommend the Mitsu TOB with your kit as well?

We are going to be shipping Mitsu TOB's with the first initial shipments and Competition Clutch will then have there similar model to a mitsu ready. The first TOB they sent to us had a metal sleeve and they are building one mitsu style.

Thanks Again,

ahh got another question for you... what are you stepping the flywheel to for your clutch? .610? .612?

I have had a few of the south bends old and the new ones. They are crap! I had maybe 250hp and was going through them in 3-5 months. I had the exedy full face disc cluth with more power and it worked just fine for almost a year. I got a lsd and an alumimum flywheel so I upgraded to the 3 puck disc and haven't had a problem yet :) Even after 5 hard slipping launches it doesn't heat up and slip, and always grabs hard spinning tires into third gear.

Also my friend has the exedy top of the line triple plate hyper clutch with alumimun flywheel that comes as a kit. That has got to be the absolute ultimate clutch out there! That thing grabs like no other, kinda of hard to get used to on the street but if you have the power it will hold!

Hey guys. Today i just finished putting in the sbr 3500 kit in my 91 gsx. the first initial drive was incredible. Grabs beautiful its smooth and i've only drive it like 25 miles. The pedal is firm but not to firm like the act 2600, but it still GRABS! I guess we will see how it works out in the next year or so but for inital rating i give it a 10!

still holding good?

Has anyone else tried the RPS Max clutch?I just want to know before I buy. Also it says has easier pedal pressure than an act2600 but is rated at 2500lbs and holds 525ft/lbs torque

i talked to the guys from exedy at the evo vs. sti shootout in etown, nj

they told me they make ACT parts :)

My first clutch back in 1999 was an RPS Dual Friction something or another. The pedal was significantly stronger than stock but it only lasted about 10000 - 15000 miles. I only had a max of 10 to 15 launches on it then it started to slip at the track.

Afterwards I upgraded to a ACT2600 and never had a problem. But that was then this is now. I currently have an ACT 2600 in my 90GSX and had disengagement problems along with wierd clutch pressure, So when I pull the trans I'll see if that nuked. If it did, I guess I'm gonna goto a SBR setup.
