Just like the subject says my AC will go from working perfectly to not working at all. The compressor appears to be engaged. When it goes warm, I can pull off the connector at the dual pressure switch and hear the compressor clutch click off, and then click back on when I replace it. The dual pressure switch is always closed when this condition occurs so I would imagine that there is no problem with the charge level. As a matter of fact I just used my precious last can of r12 to give it a charge when I figured that was the problem. (the condition was occurring before the charge already when the air was blowing 70 degrees).

Now it's cold as balls when it does work, it just doesn't STAY working...I haven't really noticed the condition at which it startes working again, it just does eventually...

What are the pieces to check that may cause this type of problem?

Check the freon line, where the little viewing port is and make sure there are little to no bubbles. You'll need your freon refilled if there are a lot, of course. Also check the car temps, are they higher when your AC goes warm? My 1st gen goes warm when the AC goes warm, but Im also missing a compressor fan. So, check the fan and make sure it kicks on when it needs to be on.
