Hey guys I got my 91 TSi out, and I have no AC and I almost passed out yesterday while driving at a stand still on the expressway, 96 degrees and humid. I know the AC pump and everything works, I just dont have any of that refrigerant stuff. I dont know much about it at all, I've just asked a couple people about it and apparently I have the "old style" and it has to be converted? How much is this going to be, alot more since it's old? Tell me how this works guys I've never learned anything about A/C systems.

Only bad thing about r134 it only gets but so cold while the R12 will freeze. Freeze 12 works really well, you can buy the freeze 12 kit at Advance with the plugs and hoses you will need to charge the AC...

the fittings on the r12 are different then the r134. the only thing they change in the "retrofit" is
A) fittings-they just put adapters
b) take out the oil for r12 and put a new oil that works with both
c)change your orifice tube or expansion valve
d) the r134 for the r12.

I ain't got no AC since last year when that mountain crossed in front of me while i was delivering tofu for my dad:p . I'm gonna slug it out against the 100 degrees here in sac this year, maybe I'll fix it after that.

Autozone has these kits to do it yourself ....10 min tops if you take time to read the manual :)
The fittings are just addapters that screw on the stock r12 ones.
The kit comes with a dial gauge in PSI that you gotta connect to 1 port ,and you drain the
r12 oil 1st....then you just bolt on the r134 can(reff that they want you to use nowadays) at the other end. You will notice an increased reading on the gauge when it's charging the system. When you feel the r134 can empty you shut of the valve..and swap it with a new container till you get the pressure in the green zone on the gauge(or specified PSI/read instructions).
The kit should also come with a sticker that you fill out and put it on the car chassy somewhere (engine bay),so when you sell it the new owner will know it's converted to r134
Look around for the sticker to start with. I think in MI is illegal to not have that sticker if a previous retrofit was made .
For future reference leave the adapters on so you don't lose them and have them there next time when you need to charge the AC system.
I would buy r134 with stop leak to start with since the car is old and the AC system might leak. It saves you the hastle to work with die and UV light latter in case of a leak.
good luck!
