A/T tranny only has two gears

So I just bought another 91 awd TSI for 500 bones, and the tranny only has 2 gear. I think is 2nd and 3rd but not sure it wouldn't go in to a different gear after. The tranny was just rebuilt 400 miles ago, could it be the TCU or a soleniod?

ok so the test light didnt work or I don't have any codes. I found paper that say the tranny was just rebuilt, any ideas????

I would take it to the shop that build the tranny and have them look at it. They know what has been done to the tranny and will be able to diagnose the problem better.

thing is it was 6 years ago and in a different town

I would still take it to a shop. Auto trannys are very complicated and pinpointing a problem is next to impossible over a forum.

Any luck? I can possibly walk you through a couple of tests. First thing is to check all connectors, wiring and fuses. Do pull the TCU and check for board damage. The TCU's used the same shitty caps that the early ECU's did. They're real bad about eating the speed sensor traces and on rare occasions, short out and burn all the way through the board.

Turns out that the BS belt broke at somepoint and threw the cam timing way off, making it only feel like it had two gears. Runs great now

So it's fixed now..Wait the bs belt broke, causing it to feel like only 2 gears..Can someone explain this scenario to me?How did the bs breaking cause the cam timing to be off?

the bs belt is located behind the timing belt when i breaks it can snag the timing belt causing it to break, jump of, or skip a few teeth. With the car running like crap and out of time it will throw everything else off. A lack in power can make it seem like the transmission has got a problem. Any questions?

no prob this is why we have preventative mantainance.. although i do not have a balance shaft .
