a question about maintenance

ok, so im seriously considering buying a 1995 Tsi awd with quite a few mods on it and a new motor with 14k. after purchasing i will be on a bit of a budget, but will be able to spend money on parts. my question is are these cars really as easy to work on as everyone says? i have no past experience working with cars beyond oil/spark plug changes, but i do understand (almost fully) the inner workings of an engine/drivetrain and have always been pretty mechanically inclined. id love to not have to pay someone to do the things to my car that i could be doing. could i potentially do most of the work myself on this car? because i am expecting things to break much more often given the modifications, and it will be a daily driver. what tools would be considered the esentials?

at 18 years of age and only being into the performance aspect of dsms for less than year, i was able to do an entire 1g headswap by myself minus the timing belt. I now know how to do timing belts though and i'm 20.

If you do not know how to take apart the cars, they will teach you.

I do not let ANYONE but myself install anything on my car because i want to know how to take it off and get it fixed if it breaks. All you really need to work on these cars, is a chiltons and access to the web/friends that can help you along if you get stuck.

Agreed. I wouldn't worry with working on your car too much, not with an awesome forum like DSMTuners. You can always count on the folks here to get you out of a bind.
