I was looking at various alternatives to the weak 2G BOV and I purchased a 1G BOV with upper pipe from a forum member at a fair price and decided to build the adapter myself.
Before I got started I was taking a look at a friend's Lancer EVO VIII and noticed the stock BOV looked remarkably similar to my 2G BOV. He runs 19-23lbs and the stock piece seems to work just fine.

I went on an EVO forum and looked for stock BOVs for sale and I picked one up for $20 shipped that was in excellent condition. When it arrived I checked and sure enough the stock tube was the same size as the 2G BOV.

Here is a picture of the EVO VIII BOV:

Here is a comparison between the EVO and 2G BOVs.

The body is a little deeper on the EVO BOV and the nipple for the vacuum source is ~120* CCW from the stock location. The stock line from the manifold is long enough to hook up with out any kinks so the install required no modifications.

The results?...
I no-longer have a boost leak and it holds boost just fine at 15lbs, I can't test any higher as I don't have the supporting mods to do so, yet.

I think for $20 this is an excellent "budget" solution, but your mileage may vary. :)

EDIT

As requested I did a boost leak test and the EVO VIII BOV is rock solid at 23psi, no leaks.

are you gonna install an uicp too? Those Evo bovs are the truth, my boys stock one held more boost than the aftermarket one he bought! But you need to deff get rid of that uicp for an even more noticable gain!

Hey for $20 thats a good replacement, and if it can hold up to 25psi, this is a great cheap alternative! Good post, you should submit this as a tech article and update it after you've ran with the setup for a while.

Good post :thumb: . I bet >90% of the tuners here don't need a BOV to hold greater than 23psi so that would work great. You may have to find a flange if you upgrade your UICP as most people that upgrade the UICP go for an aftermarket BOV as well. They may be available but I haven't ever seen an aftermarket UICP with a stock 2g BOV flange.

good idea, I was gonna do that a while back when I found out how much boost they would hold, I just didnt think it was worth swapping bovs with out the uicp. Deff a good alternative though!

JayRolla: I have seen the Dodge-Garage mod for the 1G and looks like a good solution, but this is practically a "no-effort" mod that will work well for someone not looking to push a lot of boost.

skinnykenny: Yes, I will install an UICP in the near future and I may have a time finding a flange that will work with this so I may end up using the 1G BOV I already have.

RedTurboEclipse: Thanks, I'm not sure how to do that but I will look into it. You can find the BOVs on evo forums for pretty cheap and it is a decent alternative to spending $150-$225 on a BOV that won't see over 20psi. It doesn't look as "cool" though, but will work well for the "sleeper."

Snobordin8: I will look around and see if there are any comparable flanges, if not I am sure I could fabricate something but at that point it may not be worth it anymore. :)

Thanks for the link, I will do that.

It sounds a little louder, but its not quite "ricey" LOL

No Skillz: NO, I have not done a boost leak test AFTER the mod, I did one before and it was horrible at the BOV. I could see the difference on the boost gauge, it would actually hold boost and build boost faster. The Stock BOV was leaking the moment I put any pressure to it. I am going to do a boost leak test this coming weekend so I will update this when it is done.

No Skillz: As requested I did a boost leak test and the EVO VIII BOV rocks! I pressured it up to 23psi and there was not a hint of a leak coming from the BOV. Rock solid.
I did find that my PCV is leaking a little bit, but other than that, no leaks to be found.

leet: Do you know of any aftermarket UICP that has the stock flange? I have been looking for one and would like to keep the EVO BOV with the new UICP.

I hope the evo guys don't read this.....

they're gunna wanna raise their prices on their stock BOV for more once they find out the 2g turbo guys are looking for their crap evo BOV's.......

It works awesome! Ive got a neighbor friend that has an Evo and he upgraded to the MR bov, so he just gave me his old one FREE!!! :thumb:

Well I was reading on slowboys site and another dsm vendor. They where saying the regular evo and 2g bov's are the same in quality. Saying the stock bov cant even handle the boost that it runs stock. Slowboy said if you upgrade to a MR bov that you will get more power because the stock boost already leaks through it.

...and I assume the reason they're telling you this has nothing to do with the fact that they want to sell you an mr bov.

My Evo is still sporting that sweet plastic bov. I love it. It holds 21psi without any problems. I've checked for boost leaks in the past and it doesn't leak at all at 20psi.

Yea maybe your right but plastic does not sound good. Why dont they just say the 1g is bad also. And I think they sell the MR as an upgrade to the regular evo. Most likely though they are just trying to make a sale.

I bag on the 1g bov.... the whistling is driving me CRAZY. I even swapped to a new BOV and UICP and it STILL whistles. I think I may try the EVO bov...
