99 GST restoration...

I bought this G2 for the wife and plan to restore it to like new condition. I found already that working on this car is far different from the American muscle I am use to. A full body restore and engine hop up is in the plans. I will probably have a million questions as I go along thus is why I joined this forum. I will post my progress and with all of your help hope to give the wife a ride she can be proud of. I am working out of a 3000sf hobby garage I recently built myself and plan to add on a 2000sf body and paint section by the end of the year. A custom paint job is also in the plans for this little street racer.

When I bought this car, the owner said he was hot rodding a bit and had tranny fluid leaking when he parked it. I pulled the tranny today to find this, trashed from the flywheel back with big chunks in the case exploded from the inside out. I believe it to be a result of too much HP without a tranny beef up. I do not know if I will rebuild this tranny or buy a used one but I need to know if there is a company I could order parts from to beef this thing up to handle the horse power...any responses would be appreciated. I know it will cost me some coin...you have to pay to play.

Looks like you have a nice South Bend clutch and lightened ACT flywheel so that's a good start. I don't know why that bell housing would break like that. Maybe wheel hop or something?

Well I got it on my work bench and will tear into it. By the looks of the piece of bell housing that is cracked but still connected, it looks as if something broke inside and was trying to get out since the piece is protruding outward. The flywheel is a Fidanza and I might be able to clean it up enough to use it. The face of the flywheel is still perfect. I am however having trouble finding internal parts that are high performance. I could replace with OEM but then what guarantee do I have that high HP will not tear it up again? Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thank you.....looking up TMZ answered a lot of my questions.....they rebuild trannys with all OEM parts which means that there most likely is not any beefed up parts available. If that is the case I will look into buying the parts to fix mine from the dealer and aftermarket or if a bell housing is not available look into a used tranny and rebuild it. It takes me a little while but I am slowly catching onto this import scene. I read in one forum thread that you just can't switch bell housings on these trannys. I don't understand why but I guess it will become apparent to me when I tear mine down. I might as well....a tranny with a hole in it is akin to a dog with a stopped up nose.....it just don't hunt.

As you develop your understanding of these vehicles you're going to find more proof that these are not imports, but rather American design and built cars with some models that are powered by traditional import power plants and drive trains..

But from what TMZ site says, your going to do the work yourself deduct 280.00 from the total listed price....

I have ZERO Trans experience, but that still seems high.

You are correct miliman....I am the student here and I got to keep in mind what DSM stands for although it is hard when all the parts you look up are under Mitsubishi, . One reason I chose this car over the "traditional" American car was to learn.

Looks good! I'm doing a 99 GST restoration myself but uh.. mine looks like I pulled it out of a lake hahaha.

Luckily it's rust free so body and paint and of course built motor and stuff and she will be right.

That thing is clean I wish I could have found one in that condition. Good luck!
