420A 99 eclipse GS sensor on the side of the valve cover

What is this sensor on the side of the valve cover? If this sensor goes bad what symptoms would it cause? A bit of oil seems to be leaking from the seal.

That is the Camshaft Position Sensor. Rough engine operation, stalling, or low power if it is intermittent. I replaced the valve cover gasket due to leaks, and the sensor precautionary since the engine had over 200,000 miles. If I remember correctly there was an oil ring seal associated with that sensor as well (420A Engine). The new sensor arrived with flat pins rather than round pins, so I also replaced the connector to match the sensor pins (from local auto parts store).

if your dsm is 2ga (95-96) it has different connector on the sensor, and that's not available anymore, so if it goes bad, you need to install new connector and new pig tail for it (easy job)
Same goes for CPS (crankshaft position sensor) and I do recommend to change those asap, mine broke down in middle of the uphill in a busy road just out of blue

the cam, crank, coil pack and vss all use the same connector on 97-99 cars.
don't buy a cam or crank sensor from one of you local autopart stores. they usually suck.

I bought all mine from AZ and been working just fine, and lifetime warranty if you have box and receipt, also my -98 harness has same plug on VSS as my -95 I'm tucking wiring harness and relocating ecu and fuse box and been extending some wires for that and didn't saw any cuts, I'm not saying you're wrong but I wanna double check that, cuz if so, I wanna update mine since all the wires are out at the moment, I also rebuild a -97 gs nvt350 and it had same sensor as my -95esi

you can just go change it for a new one
EDIT. or go an extra mile and buy one more close to OEM but at least I haven't had bad luck with AZ this far

i have fixed more than a few cars that had a new autozone cam sensors. ditching the AZ sensor and putting on an old oem sensor was all it took.

Right, I will be ordering an OEM one tonight. "OEM quality" is not the same as OEM unfortunately. Never seem to learn my lesson, yet I keep buying the cheap crap.

Since the 420a is a chrysler engine, mopar parts are the same as genuine mitsubishi parts. I have always gone the dodge dealership if im buying (420a) engine parts locally. They are usually cheaper than the mitsu dealership and its the same part.
