oil on the top of the engine, leaking valve cover?

ok, so my valve cover gasket was leaking when i got the car, changed it out for a full 1pc gasket and it is either still leaking or something else is. all the bolts came loose on the VC, and i tightened them up, but had oil in the well of the vc.... and only seem to be getting oil on the timing belt side, along with a bit on top of the bc. my guess is oil cap, or cap gasket? would a ebay oil cap be worth the like 10 bucks? and is it advised to use loctite on the vc to keep the bolts tight, i know only 1 hole is striped out though. here are some pics, and i have done a boost leak, and have none

You replaced all 6 valve cover gaskets right (valve cover, half moon plug 4 spark plug)? Make sure it is all installed properly and not sticking out of the back? Did you over tighten the valve cover bolts and crack the VC? Change the oil cap gasket?

it was a 1 pc gasket, so everything was there, and it had the round pieces for the plug holes seperate, i had a shop change it, it may have overtightened the vc but i know for sure one bolt is stipped, and the ones holding the timing cover are stripped. i'm going to get a new vc, probably a powder coated one and a oil cap and gasket. i'll do it myself this time and make sure it's done right. is loctite blue reccomended on the vc bolts?

If the shop stripped them out, have them fix it and helicoil the head. The bolts only go on hand tight at around 8 inch pounds. Ok so you have a gasket kit. The striped out holes could be part of your problem if it's not allowing the VC to seal properly but you should also just get a new oil cap gasket as well.

The old one that is on there now assuming its uncracked, in one piece and is basically plastic now, you can just put the new gasket over top of that and have double the sealing.

No loctite, hand tight. I used a very light layer of FIPG across the entire surface. It should also be used more liberally on the cam humps, half moon and CAS hump(1g only).

FIPG = Fixed in place gasket, expensive very well sealing fancy rtv. Works amazing and can be used in place of gaskets. We (Toyota/Lexus) use them to seal oil pans, water necks, etc. where a traditional paper/fiber gasket isn't necessary.

The old one that is on there now assuming its uncracked, in one piece and is basically plastic now, you can just put the new gasket over top of that and have double the sealing.

Good luck with that, ever double gasket an oil filter? Not good, granted it's way more pressure but you've got to remember there is blow by pressure, which over time could leak. Just remove the old one and play it safe.

Seconded on that, I picked mine up for $12.95. I believe MAPerformance has the brand new oem ones. Got one about two weeks ago and it hasn't dripped a drop since.

Actually it works and I learned that from other members on here a while ago and from searching. You really shouldn't have that much pressure in the head to cause an issue. I only went that route because my old cap and the replacement cap were loose when tightened down. I ended up trying 4 different oil caps to get one to stay tight. I'm now using an ebay cap with decepticon logo on it with no leaks.

True, unless you have an issue...like wiped out rings in my past original engine.
