i just recently put in my 98 gsx engine into my 95 body but the cam sensor is deffirent. what can i go to fix it?
can i cut the old plug in off the 98 and soder it on the wires in my 95?
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
and pleae no "i think" i need definate answers.:banghead:

The 95 and 96 cars have an internal cam sensor by the cam gears. To fix this, being.g that you have a 98 head in it now, you can put a 1g cas in the 98 cas location. That would be the easiest solution.

so what we're actually looking for here is how to modify the wiring in the 95 wiring harness to plug into the 98 cam sensor, without needing to find/ purchase a 1g cam sensor... we are using the 98 ecu from the donor car that the motor came from.

if you are planing to change the timing belt just swap in your 95-96 cam with its senors and it should plug and play. thats if you still have it.

we never had the motor from the 95, we bought just the rolling shell. we already did the timing belt and the motor is in the car, we are at the point of turning the key, just need the cam sensor wiring.

This would be your best bet... I just did basically the same thing in my 95, I swapped to a 98 cam sensor setup to make it easier to use the EVO8 ecu i had in the car. But what you are doing with the 98 ECU is the same concept. what you are doing is about as plug and play as you can get. If you don't have the 98 CAM sensor plug then you will need to find one from somewhere, I got mine from a late 90's mirage. and from there it is mostly matching up the wires (red to red, black to black, and blue w/red stripe to blue w/yellow stripe).

Edit: And you will have to pull the wires back some a bit to make it look nice, unless you don't mind having a little extra wiring stretched across the top of your engine.

thanks, since we still had the shell to the 95 that we pulled the motor from, i cut the plug from the 95 wiring harness and matched up the colors. i was basically just looking for verification that i had done it right. Its time to start her up. :)

AAAHHH.... ok, that said, we cant get the car to start. I stuck my 95 ecu in it cause its got dsmlink v3. it turns over, kinda acts like it wants to start, but wont actually start.
i did the plug wire switch so it will work with the 95 ecu, checked the "use non 95/96 cam sensor", threw a tool at the wall and pulled my hair out. none of which worked to start the car.

We checked that a few times actually. We think it might be the alarm and turbo timer that was istalled by the guy who had the car before us, Lets just say it doesnt look to good under my dash. He used but connecters and tapping connectores. It looks like crap.:notgood:

yeah im going to play with the firing order some more. i know im getting spark because i pulled the #1 spark plug and clamped it to a motor mount then turned it over and i can see it getting spark. i put a socket extension in the #1 cylinder and it is a TDC when the timing marks line up. for the firing order, I know that its a wasted spark so #1and 4 need to be on the same coil, and 2 and 3 need to be on the same coil.. am i missing something here?

swapped the firing order back and forth, it sounds like it wants to start when i have it wired as per the diagram i found. Im thinking that it has to be something with the wiring for the cas sensor. the stock 98 plug that i cut off the engine harness had a red/yellow wire, a black and a red. The plug that i took from the 95 for the cas had the same colors and i matched them up by color. i'v inverted the cas in dsmlink since it's a 95 ecu but still no luck.

In the 98 motor, on the drivers side by the cam and crank sensor plugs there is a 2-pin plug. its not there on the 95 wiring harness. what is it for? the thing it plugs into is right below the drivers side of the intake manifold.

im putting a 98 engine into a 95 body, where is this coil rewiring info?

plug you're talking about sounds almost like the knock sensor location

i just bought a 1g cam sensor so if this works i will head back on here and let y'all know whats up so for all of you who are having the same problem you will know how to fix it.

and i already have the 6 bolt cas adapter

Hey Its skylar, the guy that had that carzy ugly black talon yesterday. Im curious if that CAS you got worked. i got a couple more ideas for you but you have not posted progress. let us know whats going on k

If you dont have DSMlink, dont install that 1g CAS on your 95. It will create such bad misfires! Basically I could not drive the car on the freeway. Just install that 97-99 CAS and trace back the wire colors back (3 of them I think) to the original plug in the 95 harness (gray plug) and solder them (red-w-red ect).

Then since you are using a different CAS than your 95-96 on your 95, The firing order is now inverted... meaning that you will have to swap out your spark plug wires. So, instead of 4-1-2-3(stock), you will now use:
3-2-1-4.

Your car might still get a Misfire CEL, but It wont make the car run in "limp mode". I been through this before, and trust me, if you are on a budget.... dont install that 1g cas(in the longrun, more expensive to get it to work).

i toned out the wire for the plug that i didnt know what it was and referenced the pinout for the ecu, its the evap purge syl for emissions. so not a big deal

ive swapped the plug wires back and forth keeping 1and 4 together and 3and2 together. ive tried both firing orders. to no avail.

i also swapped out the injector driver on the firewall to no avail.

the car was sitting since 2003 before we put the motor in it. potential for debris from the old fuel lines clogging the injectors?

i toned out the signal wire on the cam sensor plug back to the ecu and its in tact.

so i know im getting spark because i pulled the plug, clamped it to the block, and cranked it, saw spark.
timing marks line up when cyl 1 is at TDC
coolant tmep and IAT read the same temp (via dsmlink) give or take a degree.
the fuel pump kicks on when cranking
when i pull a spark plug, it has no fuel residue on it (not sure if it would be injecting enough at crank to show on the plug anyway)
tested the voltage at the injector during crank, seemed to jump around a little, but the injector pulse would be so quick that it would be hard to tell...

and i havent installed the 1g cas yet. you didnt give me a wire harness for it, lucky, we found one on the 98 harness that matches it.

well i had the same thing going with me total motor and trany swap got it in and it wanted to run but just couldnt..LOL just like you guys were talking about i swaped the plugs backwards and swaped the cas 180degress and she runs so well now need to tune tho really really rich backfiring hear and there sounding like a old pre car motor.. LOL but now got to get a dsmlink and i will be set:thumb: thank you
