Hey guys I did a quick search but I'm new and I don't know what exactly I'm looking for.
First off this is my brothers car it has a 420a motor in it. He blew the timing belt while heading to work last week and I've been working on it on and off since then. I got a copy of the fsm from a guy at work and I've been using it to figure out whats going on but its not a good fsm. I finally got the motor back together after taking the head off to check for damage and finding non. As per the fsm and the hans manual that my brother bought I lined up the marks on the cam sprockets and placed the crank half a tooth to the right of the tdc mark. After finally reinstalling the motor its hard to get it to start and I have to give it gas to keep it running and it sounds like the timings off but I don't know how that could be with it lined up like it should be can anyone help me? I'm tired of working on this thing.

After you did your marks and tightened everything down, you should have turned it over at least 2 times and then checked to see if all the marks lined up (it would no longer be the 1/2 tooth off).

You can double check to see if you left anything off or didn't quite connect anything, or have an intake leak somewhere, but I, like you, suspect timing. I think you're going to have to check the marks again.

I forgot to say that part but I did turn it twice and everything lined back up and I don't remember now if the crank wasn't half a tooth off after that. I can't see how its the timing when I did everything like I was suppose to. Is there an easy way to check it without having to pull the motor again?

ok thanks for recapping me on what I wanted to do but since my bro had everything disconnected but the motor mount on the trans I decided to go ahead and pull it all because last time I pulled the tranny to do a clutch job I left the motor in and it was a bi***.

Ok guys thanks for the timing help. What else could cause the motor to sound like the timing is out?

Bent valves :coy:?

Do you have any check engine lights? If so, what are they?

Generally timing off will basically cause cylinders to fire when valves are partially open. Therefore the cylinder will not combust properly and you will lose power in that cylinder. So what you are describing is a loss of power in cylinders. Maybe look at what would make the cylinders not fire. Say a problem with spark? Cylinders not firing?

But more importantly, start with any check engine codes.

It doesn't throw a cel. I wish it did so I had a place to start. Today I was going to check the spark plugs to see what they look like. Is there a way to read out the cam angle sensor?

Check it for compression. Re-check timing marks, check for fuel on plugs, check plugs for spark.

Okay so I pulled the plugs and #s 1 'n' 3 are fine and #s 2 'n' 4 were burnt with soot and carbon. What does this mean?

I know Its a pain in the ass,but you need to get that cover off and check those marks. All that other checking is a complete waste of time if the marks are off.
OH ya it means you need to check your marks if you didnt do so when you put on the belt.Notch to the left, notch to the right,I dont care how you do it ,but when everything is tightened up and in place, you need to crank it around once and recheck your marks. When I did mine,I even had the motor running for a minute without the cover and pully, all the belts, just to make sure the timing was correct.

The timing marks are lined up exactly as they're supposed to be according to Spec. So it make me wonder if the Cam Position Sensor or even the Crank Sensor may be bad... does anybody know how to read out either one of those?
