yes i am going to be helping a friend and working on his 1996 eclipse gs. I am going to help him time it the right way. I have did this once or twice but lost all my old info on these cars. I am more into 4g63 engines now. Thanks

I am looking how i can make sure the valves are closed on this 420. I know the pins have to be at 6'o clock on intake and 12'o clock on exhaust. But i want to make sure the valves are closed. The cam gears are not the stock gears they are aftermarket. If i do a leak down test will this work? I am not sure what to do. I made sure 20 times or more that it is timed. Any help would be great. Thanks

Ok i got this timing done for my buddy. And the car has a high idle in the 900-1200 rpm range. Then if you hit the gas it jumps up of course and stays high for a few seconds. Is this normal? second question is I'm not sure if this car has stock cams. Neither does he. The car has a loppy sound like it has aftermarket cams. I'm not sure what it can be i checked for leaks and nothing. I have also made sure the throttle plate is closed. Any help would be great. Thanks :thumb:

If it's loping your timing is off. The best thing to do is get stock cam gears and time it that way. Aftermarket cams don't come zero'd out from the factory it's something you have to do your self. So time it with the stock gears then put the aftermarket gears on and zero them out. My car idles at 900-1000rpms which I consider normal. If you Rev it up and it sticks then you have another issue. Which could be your iac, map or throttle cable related. Does your buddy have a stock crank pully too?

I was off by one tooth on my 420a and although you won't damage the valves like this on a 420a, it needs fixed. To me it sounded like really bad lifter tick.

Oh and make sure to line up the sprockets with the notch on the inner timing gear cover. Most people don't realize there's a raise in the plastic where you line the two sprockets up with.

Edit: My post count is 420. :)

I timed it like five times and im sure the timing is right on time. I made sure valves were all closed when timing. Even did a compression test and leak down all good. He has a stock crank pully. He has a aftermarket intake though.

I did notice that you had to line up the cams with the notch. I did that as well. I thought he might have aftermarket cams from how it sounded. I am going to try and post a clip of how it sounds tomorrow. I cant figure this out i know i timed the car right i checked like 5 to 10 times.

I had a good machine shop Time my motor and I have stage 2 cams so I thought cool my car runs good. Almost 2 years later I took it to a real dsm shop to install a afc and they said my timing was off I was shocked after getting it done before. After it was all done my crank sprocket was off one tooth and my cam gear was off one tooth. I drove it for 6000 miles before my timing was right. The real dsm shop couldn't believe I didn't bend my valves. All because off my aftermarket obx cam gears so like I said it's probably off.

Take the valve cover off and inspect or take pics of the cams. That's really the only way to find out sadly. I definitely suggest timing it with stock gears if your still not sure. Also before when my timing was off I had great compression which was practically the same psi before and after my timing was set properly. So your valves can still close all the way but having your motor retarded a tad bit will make it sound lopy. Just my experience I could be wrong.

Here is a video of the car i did. Hope this will help. I can make another one if needed. :thumb:. Thanks.
