Hi guys, I am a current owner of a 1997 GSX. I bought the car about 2 days ago wanting to learn more about mechanics and tuning. After buying the car 1/4th a mile later code p0300 comes on, random misfire. Unfortunately the guy told me "well you signed the papers" go figure. The idle is rough, and will sometimes bog and die. My other concern is when accelerating concider ably 4-5000rpm I hear a slight metal noise.. Unfortunately I can't explain in detail more than that. The mechanic here seems to think its the injectors. After an oil change today Mobil 1 Synthetic , i smelled something from the engine, but there is no overheating. Im unsure if the teo problems are related. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. The car mods are as listed.

ENGINE
Crowler 272 intake and cams
3" exhaust piping with Megan's racing muffler
Walbro 255L in tank fuel pump
Magnector wires and NGK plugs

Drivetrain
Rebuilt trans by shep racing. (60000 miles ago)
Act 2600 clutch with street disc
Aasco light weight aluminum fly wheel
Stainless steel clutch line

The car has 107k miles on it currently. My question is would aftermarket injectors be the next thing I would need? I don't believe any tuning has been done. I appoligiZe for asking a question my first post, I wasn't planning on having to work on the car till I furthered my knowledge.

If you have a 255 and no afpr, its gonna run like crap no matter what. The 180 on the last one does mean something though. Thats greater than 5%. Might have oil in the chamber or something.

Oh really? Ill ask him about it perhaps I misheard. I know ill need a fpr, but that's only if it actually has the Walbro fuel pump. I am going to check.

Plugs are changed, and the misfire is gone. The rattle is still there.. I wanna say it seems like the turbo.. I searched, and found they will rattle sometime when they are on there way out, figure is keep this updated for anyone else.

Glad to see you are making progress. Try to pinpoint that rattle and see where it is coming from. You can check to see if your turbo has shaft play (bad thing) very easily. If you take off your intake pipe where it connects to the turbo you can see the turbo fins inside. Reach in there and grab the middle of the turbine and try to wiggle it gently. If it wiggles the turbo is going bad, if it is solid and can't be moved (don't pull too hard) then at least that part of the turbo is in somewhat good shape still.

There are other things that can fail in a turbo but that is the most obvious to check.

Hey thanks man! I will deaf try that tomorrow when it's light. I'm glad the engine light is off 👍now it's time to eliminate that rattle! Thanks for the breakdown!

Turbo is good from that standpoint, no movement at all.

Assuming your refuring to the bottom one? That's rather large, the X is to just mark the kink. If possible I'd like to know where to replace it if that's the case, would help things run smoother I'm sure. I haven't pulled the spark plugs YET because I don't have a torque wrench and I don't wanna tighten them to much, assuming the .025-.027 is the amount of pressure I should put on it. I'll look into buying one I'm sure it will come in handy. Lots of things to buy when i get paid haha. I will also try to find a fuel lab unit AFPR to put into the car. I just want to make sure, if it's modded that it's modded to correctly. No shortcuts for me.:notgood:

no, .025-.027 is the gap in the plugs. to tighten them, just trun them in by hand, and then give them a 1/4 to 1/2 turn more until the feel snug. just done wrench them down, stripped spark plug threads are NOT fun to heli-coil..

Huh... How loud is this "rattle?" If it's only under boost I'm worried it may be knock. Does a CEL come on when it makes the sound? Maybe look up some youtube videos of a DSM with rod knock and see if it sounds similiar. I've never heard of it referred to as a "rattle" though haha so I'm not too worried.

Maybe someone else can chime in on what could make a rattle only in boost with no shaft play in the turbo.

Will do, sometimes it's not even noticeable in the passanger seat. It's a slight noise not to loud, highly doubt it would be knock but could be possible. Compression tests checked out, hopefully I can get some other opinions on what it could be. I'll edit this post when I look up the knocking sound, doubtful though only because I know a recorder wouldn't pick it up if I recorded it :)

EDIT: I can't really pinpoint the noise.. it's not the noise that I hear at high idle though. If it was a rode knocking would my compression still be good?

I'll have to put it under boost, highly doubt you'll be able to hear it but I'll definitely try it.

Update, she's up and running great. Rattle was as easy as a corroded exhaust heat shield, and then we replaced the bushings on the injectors since we found cracked and torn ones. Thanks for the help guys!
