97 gs-t problems...need help asap please!!!!

ok so my buddy was driving his gs-t yesterday, goes to push in the clutch and the car decelerates to around 2500rpm's and just dies...tried to restart it and it was very hesitant but finally started...drove it down to his g-pas down the road and parked it...now it has a knock at around 25-3500 rpms...not very loud but its surely there....if you take the air filter off the sound goes away or gets noticably quieter...we tried a different air filter and it was loud again...turbo has zero shaft play and spins freely...its parked in the grass with limited tools so we havent been able to drop the oil pan and check the rods yet but it almost seems to be a little to quiet to be a rod.....nothing loose that i can see....anybody have any idea what this could be and could help us out we would greatly appreciate it...i will check back as often as possible to answer any questions too if they come up....thanks for reading my novel hope you can help haha

Where does the noise sound like its coming from the timing belt side, bottom end ?
