My son was driving down the interstate yesterday in a 97 eclipse 420a NT, MT (no mods) when it overheated. It started to overheat but the temp guage did not register( so he says) ANYWAYS!!!!! He said he was running at about 3G when it cut out for a second and came back, then died.... When i arrived on the scene (45 minutes later) motor was still hot as hell so i'm almost positive it warped the head but thats a different topic. I let the engine cool and tried to start it. NO SUCCESS.
Towed it home and put a OBD tester on it (No Codes). Checked the spark (no spark). Checked fuel and it is there. Swapped the coil with another DSM in the driveway but no luck. Changed the Cam sensor, still no spark. Checked the timing and it looks good. I have about 5 volts to the cam sensor and i think that is what i should have. Someone told me to check the injectors and everything seemed to check out.

I am at a loss
PLEASE HELP ME BE A HERO TO MY SON :sneaky: and give me a run down of the possibilities. I've been working on cars my whole life but these new electrical systems still give me trouble.

Thanks for the help

ECU regulates fuel also right? Its still getting fuel. Could it still be bad? I have an ECU off of an 420A AT that i can swap. Does the tranny matter with a ECU? Honestly i do not think it is the ECU I had it out earlier and it didn't have that fish smell. Typically they stink real bad when they go out.

What else would cause it not to get spark?

Does anyone know what the ohms reading would be on a coil pack between coils? In the back of my head i'm kinda thinking that i may be dealing with 2 bad coil packs. The only problem with that is, they are both reading the same between 1,3 & 2,4.

I need more possiblilities. There has got to be something im missing.

Again, thanks for all the help. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

theres A LOT of N/T DSM'rs on here that could help you but the title of your thread doesn't help matters... i wish i could help but my N/T never has probs, its the turbo one thats always breaking down.

1. the chiltons manual tells you the resistance your supposed to read between the coils, id dig up the info for you but my chiltons is in my car and its parked on the street 4 blocks away at the moment. ill look it up when i walk out there tomorrow and post it back up here if you haven't found it yet...

2. change the topic of your thread to N/T no spark HELP! so you get the N/A 420A gurus in here reading your post.

imo id be looking at the ECU. you said the car was still REALLY REALLY hot when you arrived on seen 45min later... that ECU on the N/A DSM's sits under the hood and is exposed to all the heat that motor puts off. you checked for a blown MOTOR fuse too right?

hopefully that gets you pointed in the right direction...

:dsm:

As far as the ECU goes, visual inspection after cracking the case will tell you whether the caps are good or leaking, however, you'd need some wild equipment to test anything else on the board.
ECU regulates fuel via injector pulsewidth, but there is just a simple relay to turn the pump on, so these aren't mutually exclusive (at least how I understand, someone correct me if otherwise). I doubt it, but did you check the fusebox?
You said you checked timing - seems you would need at least a weak spark/signal to trigger the timing light. Did you check all 4 plug wires to see if they are sparking?

Ok you can put the auto ecu in. it goes to throw a cel because its going to be looking for the auto computer for the trans but it will still run with np my buddys riding around with one in his car. i would also do a compression test for the hell of it since it was over heated so bad good luck!
