96 tsi wont idle

i just purchased a 96 tsi that wasn't running. the person before me put a new head gasket, valves, valve springs and timing belt in it and after reassembly couldn't get it to run. i just got it home and started to work on it and i can get it to start if i give it some gas. but it sounds like it it misfireing horrible. i hear no knocks or taps. i check the timing marks on the crank and cams and they seem good. i pulled the spark plugs and they are a little oily but i figure that is due to the misfire. according to the haynes manual the firing order is correct and i did a compression test and got 130-135 on each cyl. if anyone has an idea please let me know. i'm pretty mechanically inclined however i'm trying to figure out someone else's headache. thank you in advance for all your help.

Have you done a bost leak test (BLT) yet? I would start there I just bought a gst it ran like crap it had vaccume lines missing and the intercooler was disconected half way right under the filter box.

Make sure sure your coolant temp sensor is plugged in, and working. The car wont idle for crap or start sometimes if that is it. Can you smell fuel on the plugs?

I have that same problem, im pretty sure its because my bov is leaking really bad tho. So definatly check for a boost leak.

i did a compression test and the tester read between 130-135 on all cylinders. it is deffinatly getting fuel exactly how much i do not know. smell like it pouring it strait out the exhaust when it running. the problem for me is this is my first dsm and also my first turbo vehicle. i feel so confsed when i look under the hood. . i gonna check the coolent temp sensor first but i have a feeling i have boost leak. the bov looks brand new on it however i noticed smoke coming up from below the manifold when it was running. any possibility it could be the cam position sensor?

Even if you have a boost leak it has to be a very big boost leak for it to not even idle, doubt its because of this. If you can smell the fuel bet you its that coolant temp sensor, it will just pour the fuel in it if its not plugged in or working rgiht.

is there any way to test it? tried searchin but couldn't find anything. i have a multi tester so is there a resistance it needs to be?

Also make sure one of the wires isnt broken, it just takes one for your car to run like crap.

ah. missed it the first time when i searched.. i hope this is the prob . most likely wont be able to work on it for a few days. the car is at my buddies house and he about half hour away. i will keep posted on results. thank you for the help.

ok well it been a couple weeks but now i have new set of problems. changed cts. still didn't work. hapepend to be standing there scratching my head and relized the moron i bought the car from didnt have the cams in time. so tore it all down and replaced the timing belt and oil pump while i was at it. now all it does is crank but it wont fire. i'm getting fuel for sure im thinking spark is the issue. any other suggestions? i have a code reader hooked up to it and it pulling no codes.

Couple of suggestions: Boost leak, BISS screw, or like mine...Throttle cable needed adjusting.

The compression numbers are low and the service limit on a 7 bolt is 133psi, your mechanically inclined so i figure your doing the compression test right. I can say this, my motor in my 1st 2g idled like crap and it was the crank sensor. I have nothing else to add about the idle since i agree with these guys you should check for boost leak, cts, biss, or throttle cable adjustment.
