96 tsi wont start loud clicking noise under dash

My TSI will no longer start it acts like its out of gas it just turns over but wont start and it sounds like its comeing from the black box under the raido but in from of the ECU any idea what it could be?

The clicking could be the fuel pump relay. Check for voltage at your fuel pump.

Check for fuel pressure at the Fuel rail.

i think the dsm's also have an asd relay that could be what you hear clicking

CEL light was on last time it was running and this relay would be located under the dash right below the radio? i will check it out tommarow and see what happens

i guess i will need to get a volts meter to check the fuel pump

i look on the net and they do have an asd relay (Automatic Shut Down), my dads truck had a problem just like that, the camshaft position sensor went out and made that relay turn on would turn over but not start, your crankshaft position sensor could do it to. but if you want to check your fuel pump just lift up your back seat and take the cover off turn your key on and listen for a hum or feel it to see if it kicks on

Well the fuel pump is working its a rewired walbro 255 i think and its makeing a loud clicking sound is that normal? though that is partly where the clicking sound is comeing from asides under the dash. Is that mean my pumps going bad or am i out of gas? im setting on a hill at a angle and i bought gas in a can and put in it so surely to god its not out of gas.

Also is there away to bypass the ASD relay

there is a few things you can try first i would go to autozone and rent one of the chack engine computers because i think if the light is on it is proly one of your sensors, also try re-wiring your fuel pump back to normal, on my car something happened to my rewire and my car would not start i messed with it for like 3 months because of that, but my CEL was not on, also if it is one of your sensors bypassing the asd relay will not do anything because those sensors tell your computer when to give spark, is your car getting spark?

bad thing is i bought the car with all the mods on it i didnt do the wireing so i dont even know what to do on that part but if it was wired wrong it wouldnt be working would it? cause it is comeing on and clicking and it looks as if the hot wire runs from the pump stright to the battary

The car is set up for dsm link and it was working fine before this started happening now all sudden it says I/O timed out when useing dsm link on my laptop

I was useing the laptop for a code checker but not now

when you put ## hand on the fuel pump did it kinda make a vibrating feel like it was priming up? ### when that happened to my car it was working fine then it just quit working and never did again, as far as dsm link goes i have never used one so i dont know anything about that

Is there fuel pressure or not.. if there is FP than it could be the capacitors in the ECU leaking.. warning of impending doom.. for more info look here..

Definetly the ECU, I just went through all this, if it clicks on startup and doesnt start the ECU is hit.

I have a 97 gst could i put the ECU in the 96 tsi just to see if thats what it is?

if it is clicking and not cranking check your battery cables and most importantly your grounds! I just had a very similar issue this past weekend...loud clicking from relay but engine not turning over.

Went out there today and messed around with it and it started right up no clicking sound or nothing and low and behold the dsm link is working again so that tells me right there that its more then likely my ECU is going out or on its way out Is there any where i could send this to get it repaired or sould i buy another and have the dsm link chip removed from this one and solderd into a new ECU ?
