Good evening guys,

I just picked up a very sweet little car and have started the process of rebuilding it. My fiance's dream car is a Mitsubishi eclipse so I found a Talon on craigslist and after a couple road trips I brought it back to my garage to begin the project. I went ahead and picked up an extra 7 bolt short block and took it to my local engine shop to be machined. I'm totally open to your guys advice on what engine internals to upgrade to, I'm planning on picking up new bearings, studs, pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods, etc. with a .020 over bore. My end goal is to have between 450-500 hp, is it worth turning it into a stroker while the engine is at the shop? Even though we don't have a nice 1/4 track close to our corner of Montana, I want to get somewhere close to 10 seconds if I can.

Then once I've got the engine complete I plan on working with MAP to get all of the other essential components upgraded. I already have ordered small battery and mount, Mishimoto fans, Mishimoto x line rad, Mishimoto rad hoses, DC Sports Rear Spt, DC Sports Front Spt, Motor Mount Inserts, Torque Solution Subframe and Master Bushing Kit, Amsoil for everything, and an ebay Rebuild Kit.

Next on deck is the Injen intake, VRSF Intercooler, JMFab Street Intake Manifold, S90 70mm TB, Synapse Eng DV, MAP Exhaust Manifold with a Precision 5858 Turbo, 1000cc Fuel Injectors, Walbro 255lb Fuel Pump, Fuel Pressure Reg kit, and most importantly ECM Link v3. Then I'm thinking about working with IPT to make the tranny strong. Am I on the right track so far?

Finally I want to focus on the handling by getting the Baer Claw brakes, Yonaka coilovers, and eventually new wheels and tires.

This is my first DSM but I'm really excited and look forward to all the advice!

Thanks,
Cody & Aline

Welcome, and you're definitely on the right track. Everybody has they're own preferences for internals, I have Manley pistons .020 over, eagle h beam rods, etc. and couldn't be happier. I would recommend a blance shaft elimination as well. Dont forget a bse an prothane inserts will shake you up quite a bit. There are many tried and true combos it's up to you.
I would also recommend a properly depowered rack (I had Eaton motor works depower mine for $80 and I absolutely love how she handles), but you may not want to for a DD- I do but my gf won't even drive the car now.
Also, I realize you wanted an eclipse, but I BEG OF YOU FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT DO ANOTHER ECLIPSE CONVERSION.

Sounds good PlanZero I do not plan on swapping to an eclipse, but I will be changing to Viper red over the next few weeks. I will also hopefully have my engine back from the shop after being machined. Ended up going with some nice internals to get ready for the boost in power. eagle h-beams, eagle 88mm crank, wiseco pistons, gsc s2 cams, gsc balance shaft, fluidampr, and now I'm considering the gsc beehive spring set. Then i went ahead and got the vrsf intercooler kit, too bad ETS stopped selling their piping. Next up is the new manifolds and turbo. I'll throw up pictures once the new paint is on.

Went ahead and jumped on the MAP manifold with a precision 5858 turbo and comp 40 wastegate. Things are really starting to come together. Now to strip the car and get some paint on before the snow starts falling... and wait for the parts to show up.

Parts are showing up and for the most part it appears I made good decisions. However I went with a Duraflex Drifter Body Kit which is very aggressive looking and should fit the new VRSF intercooler well. My only complaint is the rear bumper was designed for an eclipse so I think I'll just keep the stock rear bumper for now. Still trying to find somebody to help me get the engine and tranny out since this is my first rodeo. Managed to get the intercooler, radiator, intake, TB, both manifolds, turbo and engine harness removed. Hopefully my organization of the bolts etc. was good enough to get all the new hardware in correctly. Engine has been machined and bored .020 over; dropped of the new wiseco pistons, eagle rods and crankshaft, and fluidampr to the shop. Next up is the GSC S2 camshafts and GSC springs.

With some luck I managed to get the head off my engine and dropped it off at the shop with some good stuff. Those 12mm 12 star bolts caught me by surprise. The shop is installing the ARP studs, ACL bearings, GSC S2 Crankshafts, GSC balance shaft, Eagle forged rods and crank, along with wiseco .020 over pistons. I also went for it and dropped of my valve cover to be powder coated red. Do you guys have any more advice for me at the moment? Just want to make sure I'm heading the right direction to hit around 500hp.

Alright so I ended up going with a Innovative Motorsports Boost Controller that also has wideband. Now what gauge should I add next? The Innovative dual function oil pressure and temp or the Innovative dual function battery and coolant temp?

It's been awhile so I thought I would share an update. Made a decision what my second gauge will be... the VC-50 from Snow Performance with their entire stage two kit.

The engine is totally built and ready to go back in, but first it's time for paint. Also this is the time that I will be having the auto trans rebuilt, since it has 206K on it. Using IPT Parts and the Translab Shift Kit.

After that I should have all the parts to get this beast running, already have ECU back with ECMLink V3 ready to go. I was debating on using the ECMLink to control the meth injection, but the new VC-50 from Snow seems pretty slick, especially when paired with the failsafe.

Anyone running the S90 70mm TB with the VRSF intercooler on a 2g? Did you go aluminum or steel for your elbow to the TB? 3" or 2.5"?

I'm thinking since the piping for the intercooler kit is 2.5" I may as well keep it that size and just use a coupler that goes from 2.5" to 3" for the TB. Probably using Mishimoto couplers and just a 90 bend section of pipe. I look forward to your thoughts and experience.

Also forgot to mention that I finally got the registration and plates ready, so the pressure is on to hit the streets.

Need some advice, should I throw the engine back in and get everything assembled before snow flies? Or wait to have the engine bay painted along with the rest of the car?
I'm just not sure if it pays off in the long run to paint the engine besides sex appeal. I would like to have everything match but the work left to clean up my engine bay is pretty huge. Maybe I'm just lazy.

Thanks guys. One more thing, if I do wait to paint the engine bay I will be able to save up for a new transmission so I can do it all at once. Doing it right takes time unfortunately and I would love to get this thing running... but I want to get the big stuff right from the beginning. Next up on deck is an IPT auto trans and a snow performance stage 2.5 meth injection set-up. I really dig the fact that the snow kit gauge is 52mm which is the same size as my Innovative SCG-1 boost controller, which fit my gauge cluster. Should be pretty slick.
Sound like a good path? It's taken me two years already so I guess no rush. We moved down to Missoula, Montana if anyone in the area works for beer!

Well yesterday and today were long days but I got the talon and all the parts into my garage... moving is never fun but now I’m excited to get her running.

Just for fun I’ve attached photos for the first time in a while... I got a kick out of the difference between some of the stock parts and the new ones. A long way to go, so if you are in Missoula or close send me a message!
