96 GSX . Wow .Bad day

Hi everyone , I have been a member for a while but I just bought a car and this is my first post so that makes me a newby .Well today I bought the yellow 96 Gsx that is on ebay . I've wanted one for a while so this morning me and my son took a 2 1/2 hr ride to go look at the new toy . Some things were good some were bad but low mile (67,000) gsxs are getting hard to find . So we take it for a ride ,oh my god ! fastest car I've ever driven . Car was boostin 20 lbs with a 16 g turbo . At this point I'm starting to like this car but i'm still a little weiry . Car idles rough from the cams and check engine light is on so it probably won't pass NYS emmissions . So what do I do ,buy it ,talked the dealer down from 7,000 to $ 5,700 and off we went . For the first hour car ran pretty good , then it got ugly . car started running bad ,seemed like it was loading up , fumes were strong , ran for about 5 more minutes then it went bang ....bang ,and the car shut down . My son was behind me he said it flamed out the exhaust when it went bang . So I'm in the pooring rain on the side of the thruway waiting for a flatbed to take away my new car .Wow . Bad day . I hope this isn't a sign of things to come . Boy car is fast though ,was .. I'm outta my league , I don't know anything about these turbo cars . Live and learn i guess . Thanks for listening . Or a hole in the piston . They chose to change the whole motor . I don't know if there were any internal goodies in that motor . It's all bolt ons .Unless head work , head studs . Bummer ,I don't know . Kurt

yeah i agree! you payed for it i mean you'll have to tear it down but who knows there could be some good stuff in it. DEFINITELY worth it!

So at 20 psi on a 16g what was controlling the fuel and air? obviously with all the fuel mods the injectors where upgrade meaning something had to be controlling them, SAFC, keydiver, or link. Unless he removed the injectors put some stock ones, then left it dialed up at 20psi. Tell since you aren't a turbo guy, what grade of fuel did you put in your car at refill?

I put in 93 oct fuel . Nobody knows what is controling air and fuel . Kid bought it as a daily driver and it was a little to much . He traded it in to this dealer after 2 months . I was hoping he was gonna put the race cams back in ,guess I better call and ask . I don't know what size injectors either , or if fuel pump was done . I have a gauge and psi reg under the hood .

Wow, you have a crazy story going here. I would have just told the dealer you wanted your money back. Honestly, its not that hard to find "low mileage" dsm's....clean dsm's on the other hand are pretty rare. I got lucky and picked up a stocked out tsi awd with 68k on it with a clean carfax and full maintance records from the dealer. Not that it matters now, cause its not even close to stock now.

No question, you need to get that motor that they pulled out of there. It's yours and it has a lot of goodies that you can pull off and use for the motor that they put in there.

Sorry to hear about all of the trouble that you have gone through with this car. I can't say that things will get better with it being a dsm, but you can only hope for the best.

Dealer said I can have old mtr and he is gonna put race cams and aem adjustable cam gears and the timing belt on new mtr .

I'll almost bet money that this car will never run right again. A small indepedent dealer like that should never be touching timing belts or cams. This is not something they do everyday and not something they specialize in. These cars are very finicky to say the least and having someone that's not 100% trusted do a timing belt on one is probably the worst thing you could do. You need to find out what injectors and fuel pump are in the car.

Bent plug is usually detanation. With the chamber design its not possible for the piston to hit it. Probably blew a hose and went lean. Get dsmlink or a logger. Didnt catch if there is a wideband to monitor your A/F.

sounds like it was running to rich and not enough spark or the other way around... 20 lbs is too much for factory injectors and pump. like he said, look for a walbro in your car, if you don't have one I'd recommend a 255 and bigger injectors just to be on the safe side... for now i would tune it down to 12-15 until you get a good supporting set up
