96 GSX Transmission Problems

Bought this car with a bum tranny. Bought a replacement and had it intalled by a buddy. When first test drove 1st and Reverse work fine. However when tranny attempted to shift into second the gear wouldn't engage, popped into neutral basically. Once the car slowed back down it drops back into 1st. Any insight as to what the problem may be?

In addition, once parked the car now will start and drive about 15 feet and dies. After which it won't start for a few hours, at which time it does the same thing. I can't think of why it would do this either..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the tranny fluid level with the car in neutral? What year car did the tranny come out of? As far as the stalling issue it could be anything electrical or even mechanical. It may be a dying CAS (cam angle sensor) if it starts and run fine for a short time. Any engine codes? You need to search and do some more troubleshooting.

Have you checked that the tranny and transfer case were same spline.
