Hey guys,
on my 95 gsx the rear diff locks up when i drive sometimes, is there anyway to fix this problem or do i have to go out and buy a whole new diff? where can i find one cheap? easy to install? thanks, i need all the help i can get :thumb:

By lockup do you mean to say that both wheels just stop turning and drag? Or do you mean one wheel locks up when you turn?

We need a bit more information as the problem could be your center diff, transfercase, or rear diff. Describe what you do to make the wheels lockup.

yea, the rear wheels kinda stop working (like they just stop). We put some grease in the rear diff and it seems to work fine now but im not sure if it will hold up. I think i should just buy a new rear diff, will a 97 rear diff fit on a 95? thanks alot

it locks up when i step on it somtimes, they drag and then i slow down and there fine, if i gradually go faster its fine

Doesn't sound like your rear diff is going out. Sounds like a case of a locking up transfercase.. A bad transfercase will make it seem like your rear diff is going but in reality its the gears mating in an unwanted fasion in the transfercase due to lack of lubrication. I'd check at your local Dodge/Chrysler or Mitsu dealership to see if the transfercase recall has been done to your car.

Dump the fluids from your tranny, transfercase and rear diff and inspect them. My guess is you will see metal fleck in the transfercase fluids.

It isnt likely that you will break your rear diff unless you do something major or it runs dry for a while.

Refill the tranny with SyncroMesh/Shift and put strait 90w gear oil in the transfercase and rear diff. Drive it around a bit and see if the problem occures again, if it does then you will need to pull the transfercase and check it out.

If I understand you correctly the problem sounds like mine. When I would be on the freeway at 60mph plus in the snow or even the rain it would seem as if my car constantly wanted to break loose in the rear and slide all over the place, as if the e-break was just so slightly pulled. I thought tires was the problem but I had way over 50% tread left. Went to rebuild my driveshaft last week and noticed that my transfer case was empty due to a leak and near destroyed on the inside for the most part. Im sure that is what was causing the slight lock in the rear. Do a transfer case leak check.http://www.tmo.com/today/faqs/xferleak.htm
Hope that helps. Im in the same boat. :|

look espicially for ANY metal shaving in either, if you find metal shavings in your fuild it won't last too long. :dsm:
