Hey Guys!! Of course I am a newbie especially when it comes to these cars but I am interested in buying this particular model. Is this particular model a good starting platform? Is there any common problems I should look for before purchasing this vehicle? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.:thumb:

Its the better version of these cars. What are your plans for the car? Is it stock? One common issue with these cars is lifter tick. Also crankwalk but that is over rated imo. Give more detail on the car your looking at and what your looking for.

DSM's are a great starting platform for a person who wants a good performance car, but doesn't want to spend a ton of money. Is there any reason you want fwd though? I much prefer the awd and would never switch. Without LSD, the fwd cars have lots of trouble with traction when they make more power. I have nothing against anyone who wants to build a fwd for the challenge, or to fit in a certain class, but in general I would look for awd if I were you.

Wow I really need to learn to fully read a post. I thought I read AWD. Since your looking to a FWD the only pro it has over the AWD it top end speed. Both have the same motor and are imo the best 4 cylinder cars. These cars is what got me into tuner cars and they are fairly easy to work on. They also have a great look stock(97 to 99). Would be a great car to get and learn on

yes i would agree with everything said. they are very easy to learn on. read up on here and you will be able to learn everything you need to know, maintainence or modification. i would also recommend getting a chilton's or haynes manual.

these cars are very quick and very fun to drive. you will not be disapointed

Cons: 2g 7 bolts have the potential to crankwalk more than any other DSM engine (other than the 98-99 cars with the split thrust, those 7 bolts are golden). Also, unless you have at least an LSD insert installed, anything over 250whp will be spin master flex.

Pros: HIGHWAY MONSTER with the gearing, and much less weight.

Ive always been fond of the FWD's for street bruisers, and AWD's for track sluts. To each his own, but it would be a fun car to get into for you. Keeping it under 350whp and using nothing heavier than a 2100 pressure plate will help not push the crankwalk factor, and keep those skinny dipper rods from blasting off out of the side of your block.

Thanks for the info guys. The car will be nothing more than a street car with an occasional drag strip pass. The car itself is completely stock. I am going with it because the current owner only wants $2850 for it and it is in excellent shape. I would prefer an AWD but finding one for reasonable money is next to impossible. Everyone thinks there car runs 10's when it is an untuned, ragged out piece and paying more than $5000 for a low to mid 90's vehicle just doesn't sit right with me.

Thanks for the info Joe. I will definitely keep these things in mind. An LSD insert will one of the first things I will do just because they make the car drive and accelerate so much better. Not planning on going crazy with it. A Big 16g, 550's, hard intercooler pipe kit, and a front mount. That will probably be the extent of the mods. I have other vehicles I can go fast in:cool:

if you really want to hear some bad stuff about dsm's go to a honda forum and see how much people hate these cars, specially people that havent owned one yet LOL.

but here you will listen to nothing but good stuff, and some random people mention crankwalk.

personally these cars are very good performance platforms, but the youngest dsm is 11 years old and the oldest 21 years old, so these are not the best daily drivers/performance cars, gotta choose one.
