92 trann/tcase into a 90

IIRC yes. You cannot, however, use a 92 tranny with a 90 tcase or a 90 tranny with the 92 tcase. You will also need to transfer the brakets on top of the 90 tranny onto the 92 tranny for the shifter cables. Or get 91-94 cables, and shifter base from another manual car.

If you go between 90 and 91-94 transmissions then you need to use the corresponding shifter and cables for that year. So if you use a 90 transmission then you need to use a 90 shifter and 90 shifter cables, and if you use a 91-94 transmission then you need to use a 91-94 shifter and 91-94 shifter cables.

As for the transfer case all that matters is that the spline count matches, if they don't it will be pretty easy to notice.

Are you sure? I'm almost certain he will only need to change the two brakets on top of the transmission. I've actually got a 93 trans in my car and when I bought it, it had the 90 brakets on top. My buddy was using it before me in his 90 car. He parted of his car and I got the tranny, switched the brakets and it worked fine in mine.

You are correct. As long as he uses the 90 braket he will not need to switch cables or the base.
