92 AWD trans in a 90 FWD????

Well my question is I have a 1990 laser FWD and I had my trans looked at by a local dsmer and he said the trans is shot and needs a total rebuild. Looking like around 600 bucks I will need to put into it. He has a 92 awd trans that he said is in good condition and he says the awd trannies are stronger. I can get the awd trans for cheap. I have read alot that you can weld the center diff and it should work. Being that my car is a 90 what else would I have to change for this to work? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks guys!! BTW I am going to be running a hx35 with e85 at 30psi that is why he is telling me the fwd trans probably not worth doing a standard rebuild and the awd trans would be the better option.

I would just find another FWD trans.

And you would need:
Shifter cables and bracket from the 92.
AWD flywheel
AWD starter
I don't know if the clutches are the same or not between the FWD and AWD, but I doubt it.

Just get another FWD trans, you'll be better off.

the money you would have to put into the trans to make it work + the cost of the trans would be over 600

You'd need an AWD trans with a welded center diff or the car wouldn't move.

Yea get the fwd trans less work same amount of money unless the guy has everything lying around and will do the work for cheap other than that it'll be less of a head ache

The awd trans works great but there is the added cost of everything needed to make it work.

Youll need to weld the center diff in the trans. Remove the output shaft and block off that hole. As stated above youll need the awd flywheel, starter plate, and tran mount bracket that bolts to the trans. The clutches are the same between the two if its a turbo fwd trans and awd trans. Then youll need to figure out the linkage situation since its a 90 car with 91+ trans.
