91 oil cooler

Ok Ive been trying to figure out how to install an oil cooler into my 91 talon awd manual. I have read many threads that say this and that but im not clear on wether or not I can just tap my current housing and do away with the crush cooler behind the oil filter. Im doing this because my downpipe has to be removed to change the filter and the heat exchange between the two.

So question is, I have a tranny cooler that I was going to use on my auto awd but got rid of it before I installed it. I still have the cooler can I adapt it into my 91 housing and get rid of the factory crap cooler.

To fully get rid of the stock 91+ oil cooler, you will need to find a 90 OFH. The 90 OFH doesn't have the cooler on it, and was designed with a external oil cooler!
So you will have the two holes already there for your oil cooler!

How about using an aftermarket sandwhich adapter? Here's an example: Flex-a-lite 3965 - Flex-a-lite Oil Filter Sandwich Adapters - Overview - SummitRacing.com Used one on my 300zx and have not had an ounce of trouble with it.

Ok so will the sandwich adapter install in the place of the 91 oil cooler to make up for the extra space? If so, all I'll have to do is block off the coolant lines to the 91 oil cooler and run my lines to my aftermarket cooler behind the bumper Right...and will a dsm trans cooler for an auto sub for an oil cooler?

i went from the the sandwich plate to a 90 cooler .. was one of the reasons my engine blew.. so 90 oil cooler is good insurance built nice and clean.

sandwich probly would not work with you. i just went though the same problem. sandwich adapter will still put the filter out close to down pipe. 2 options.1 oil filter relocator kit 2. 90 oil filter housing with cooler. i chose option number 2. theres a member on here selling everything you need for $100
