91 eclipse gsx with galant vr4 tranny trouble

We have a 91 GSX project that we are working on now that mine is finally back up and running. The gears were not shifting into 2nd, 4th, and reverse. Went under and foung out that someone put in a galant vr4 tranny in but never finished the job to get it to shift in all gears. Can any one point me to the instructions to complete this. I have looked all over that people have done the swap but no instructions on how it was done. Any help. Thanks. Everything on this car appears to be stock.

Check your shift cables as well as making sure nothing is hitting the forward movement of the shift lever assembly on the transmission.

Already checked. Moved everything from around it and can go into every gear by hand when under the hood. Even extended the shifter cable.

Isn't the bracket on the trans that holds the cables different for eclipse and galant? Might want to check into that. Double check the trans mounting bolts. Make sure the hydraulics are blead properly.

E39A GVR4 shift cables are: MB659306, the shift cable bracket on the transmission is MD735585.

A late 1991-1994 DSM would have the following:
shift cables: MB659866
shift cable bracket: MD735585

The difference is that if your 1991 talon is an early 91; as in 1990.06.2-1991.03.2 (June 1990 through March 1991), your shift cable bracket on the transmission would be MD738207.

The shift cables on 1G DSM's are the same from 1990.06.2-1994.05.1 -- MB659866. The only ones with adjustable end shift cables that need to be used in conjunction with 1990 shift lever assembly, 1990 cables, 1990 cable bracket on trans, and 1990 shift lever assembly inside the transmission (shift shaft, selector, and shift rails); are the 1989-1990.06.1 shift cables -- MB484624.


Do some searches for differences between 1990 vs. 1991-1994 shift cables, shift lever assembly, etc. as someone else may have switched these things in the past on your vehicle.

As for the current shift cable location, inspect the shift cable bracket on your old transmission as well as the shift levers on the transmission itself; try the old shift cable bracket on this transmission if the shift levers are the same but the bracket is different.

We don't have the old transmission. This is the transmission that came in the car when we bought it from someone who had passed away.

Hello,

I swapped a 1990 c51Ph jdm tranny from a galant into my 1991 awd. I used the cable mount from my 1991 transmission and also the vertical shifter lever that you can unbolt. It shifts great. It has a short throw.

I posted this for anyone dealing with this issue!

That very problem can happen on an Eclipse when the shift lever shoe wears down (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/mai...t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.html#post152266167). Check if your Galant has the same one.
