I was driving to work when i heard a loud clunk and gringing and my wheels locked up and i slid to a stop. It goes into every gear and wants to move but feels like there is a massive parking brake on LOL. When i do get it to roll it goes fine for a second or two then feels like somones slamming on the brakes. It does roll in reverese so im guessing the problem lies with the t-case??. Would a bad carrier bearing cause this, and if i pulled the drive line and t-case could i run it fwd till i get a new one. I also have the option of putting a fwd tranny on it but would i need different axels or flywheel. Im fusterated...............

Probably ran it out of oil, check your level I bet it's empty. And I bet your yoke leaked it all out... It's a recall item look it up. You need a new T-case...

I hope its just the t-case. If i pull it and drive it to see, it wont hurt it will it? or how else can i check. How much would you like for your t-case shipped to denver

Its def your t-case. Same thing happened to me, I was down the street from my house when it happened. Your lucky you wasnt on a busy highway going 80mph. Its rare but there are horror stories of t-case failures that results in serious injuries and or death.

Listen very carefully, DO NOT attempt to move the car under it's own power before replacing the T-case.

what will happen if i move the car around just curious. I was doing 40 on my way to work. when i got put in the death slide i didnt hit anyone or anything just made plenty of people mad LOL.

Moving around the yard is ok just don't drive it for any length, you can and will trash the viscous coupler and the center diff...

Awd swapping a 1g is pretty much impossible, so i'd assume that it is a factory awd car. If you need to drive it up on a trailer or pull it in the garage than you can drive it like that (with the transfer case in). But don't try to drive it on the street. Also don't remove the transfer case and try to drive it. First off, the driveshaft will be hangine down, and beating the hell out of the bottom of the car, second of all, you will fry the viscous coupler instantly, it won't hurt the center diff, but it will fry the v/c.

As was already mentioned drain the oil and see what you get. The t-case doesnt look to tough to change. Definitly keep it AWD you have everything in place might as well use it. If you have to change the t-case make sure you get one with the proper spline count. Do a search on here to have this explained better. Sorry about the cofusion just makeing sure of what you had.

I got it in the air and the rear end spins freely, So thats not it. it goes into every gear with no grinds and rolls so the tranny shouldnt be the issue. its some what intermintent so i def think its the t-case. Im going to get one tommorow.

will a 7-bolt t-case work if it has the same spline count. The bolt pattern isnt different or anything?

As long as the new t-case is from a '96 and older it looks like the case bolt pattern is the same and same gear ratio. You just have to make sure that the t-case you get has the proper spline count and off the right trans. i.e. an auto trans t-case will not bolt up to a manual trans and a manual trans t-case will not bolt up to an auto. If you search the site you can find out more about the differences. I have read about different gear ratios but I am not sure when they changed. I do know it has to match the front drive or you will trash the new t-case.

Try this, if your rear end is not an LSD when you spin a back tire one way, the one on the opposite side will spin the other way, check for that. if you have an LSD rear end and try to turn a rear tire it should spin the opposite tire in the same direction as well as spin your drive shaft.

Its pretty much been 100% proven its the transfer case, he even said the rear end spins.
Changing the t-case isnt hard, just get the down pipe unbolted for clearance and have a long extension to get to the bolts on the top that you have to feel for. Have an extra jack to help you hold it when removing it, it wont just fall off or anything after the bolts are out because of the input shaft.
