Was doing about 80mph and all of a sudden boom and this smoke similar to a fire extinguisher comes shooting up out of the hood and its on the timing belt side... it came out and stopped... any idea what this could be? and now my engine knocks...

more than likely the boom is motor spinning a bearing, oil pump seizing, or possibly water pump.

what i would do is first things first do a compression test and leakdown test to see what happened. If your motor is now knocking sounds like something in the bottom end gave out. Check said block for holes and take off the timing covers.

ive put the car behind a garage dont have any more funds to spend into it the guy is supposed to come buy the engine back because the engine isnt fine... but where can i find new engines or fairly used engines... 91 tsi fwd im going to save up and buy a new engine for it im done with this 100k plus engine bullsh*t

if you search around on ebay, there are actually guys selling brand new rebuilt cryo treated motors in that 1500 dollar range.

thanks Matt j +1 for you... ah man this is my first car and such bad luck with it... but im not letting it go =]

ya these cars are a handful but they just need some love and attention to them and they are a dream. You can also just find a blown longblock or something as long as the crank is good and do a rebuild yourself so that way you know what is in it and you can break it in yourself, that way you know whats done to it and such.

last time i priced out doing a complete rebuild on my car with all new bearings, machining the crank, new 2g pistons on 1g rods along with new oil pump and water pump with balance shafts removed it was like 1200 bucks. That included all parts and labor.

can someone explain to me what a long block and short block is? if the guy will not return my money for the engine as he stated he would then i plan on rebuilding it... so im looking at around 1000-1500 for an engine rebuild all i know is that the tsi is gonna be sitting for a while because my account has reached ZERO and i needa find another job and work to save up and build the car...

well the engine i have i think its a headgasket problem and it knocks so maybe a bearing or something... if the guy doesnt return the money like we agreed on should i buy a rebuild kit and rebuild it? im wanting a daily driver and something like 250 horses nothing more 16-18 psi would be good any kits i should go for please point me in the right direction...

If you have a place to tear it down, you might want to take a look and see what's wrong. That's free as long as you have a place to let the car sit for several months, and you'll find out what's wrong. Then you can judge how much money to save up.

i agree on this one, my talons head gasket blew just like 2 monthes after i bought it, i parked it, started tearing it apart, and now the car has been sitting since last october. You can piece together a rebuild on it, just know what you want, and what kind of power goals you are hoping to obtain.

You said 250 horse which isnt to far out of reach. My recommendation would be a set of 2g pistons, make sure the head is flat, new headgasket, and new headstuds. I believe that with only plans of 250whp a set of stock head bolts would be sufficent and a stock headgasket would hold just fine.

If you need some more help give me a pm and i can help you out as much as possible in getting you pointed in the right direction.
